I've heard the explanation is actually more straightforwardly misogynist: suppressing estrogen levels to an unhealthy point shapes men in really weird ways.
Front and side profile of a cis man with unhealthily low estrogen levels. His legs are thin and spindly, though he has a big gut and a weird bulge on his upper back near his shoulders. It makes him look almost hunchbacked, but his head is aligned with the rest of his back. It gives his side profile an S shape.

The candidate was a black Christian with a name that sounded Arab & Muslim-- not a great fit for MAGA's prejudices. If he's surprised the leopards ate his face, he's also even dumber than the average Trumper.

He's not even self aware enough to do that. The guy has disparaged divorce using his grandparents as an example. Basically, he says his mom's divorces made for an unstable childhood for him, and his grandparents staying together provided him stability, so couples should always stay together.
https://www.latimes.com/california/story/2024-08-09/jd-vance-orange-county-high-school-pacifica-divorce-marriages-dave-min-scott-baugh

“This is one of the great tricks that I think the sexual revolution pulled on the American populace,” Vance said. “Which is this idea that like, well, OK, these marriages were fundamentally — you know, they were maybe even violent, but certainly they were unhappy. And so getting rid of them, and making it easier for people to shift spouses like they change their underwear, that’s going to make people happier in the long term.”

He added: “And maybe it worked out for the moms and dads, though I’m skeptical. But it really didn’t work out for the kids of those marriages. And I think that’s what all of us should be honest about. We’ve run this experiment in real time and what we have is a lot of very, very real family dysfunction that’s making our kids unhappy.”

On a serious note, this seems to be a thing in their era. Many of these extremely powerful guys look incredibly scraggly, which is impressive given that it's not like any picture was candid back then. Even the traitors were a mess, like the Confederate VP:
Confederate Vice President Alexander Stephens is shown seated in a suit. He's a tiny built man, half Tiny Tim and half crypt keeper, and his hair should be enough to get his barber prison time.

Somehow we all know which heritage they mean, and unfortunately not the good sides.

Unsurprisingly, when your denomination was forged by their support for slavery, they're not going to be great on racial *or* labor issues. To be clear, other denominations aren't perfect, but the difference is real & mappable. Scandinavians, of course, are mostly Lutheran.

And again, even if taken at face value, this is blatantly unconstitutional. States are specifically allowed to dictate the manner of their federal elections, per Article I, Section 4, Clause 1. This isn't something the President gets to do.

Demographic voter predictions are surprisingly good, j/s. www.economist.com/interactive/...
Voter demographic calculator showing that a white man 65-74 who is Agnostic, lives in Washington State, and in the city, and is straight with a post-graduate degree is 84% likely to be a Harris voter, 16% Trump.

Ben Song? Really? I'm sure they got the wrong guy, otherwise he messed up his leap pretty badly.

I'm a little bummed they included Dr Jesse Lazear (second on their list) but didn't mention the guy and his method of death is depicted in a stained glass window in the National Cathedral in DC.

This has me thinking of this guy again, Werner Goldberg, a half-Jewish German whose photo was used as Nazi propaganda of the "ideal German soldier." He served in their army invading Poland, before being discharged over his ancestry. He & his father were the only survivors in his paternal family.

It's basically left-er because 1) there's already a rightwing media system, so what's the point, and 2) for religious reasons the educational audience skews left-- You're not gonna get the young earth creationists. At any rate most of the funding is private already. www.npr.org/about-npr/17...

While all of these are good changes, I'm not sold on their explanatory power in that time range. Many of these factors hit later, & caused 20th century improvements. For example, In the mid1800s, pasteurization wasn't yet widespread (invented in the 1860s, not common for milk til the 1900s).

From the graph in my original link: servicewomen suffer SA at a rate ~5x their male counterparts, but since there are ~6x as many men in total, most victims are still male.

Diphtheria is viscerally terrifying. Hearing death tolls from centuries ago is one thing, but have you seen pictures? A membrane grows across the inside of a kid's throat and strangles them from the inside. I wished people realized this was what this is, not some old timey flu.

Without downloading any new pictures, where are you at mentally?
The character Squidward from SpongeBob SquarePants' torso is shown, with a large button pinned to his shirt. It says "I really wish I weren't living through a major historical event right now!" (In the SpongeBob font, of course)

Yep. For those who want a more Biblical source: James 2:24 "You see that a person is considered righteous by what they do and not by faith alone". Honestly the whole context is pure fire.
James 2:14-26

14 What good is it, my brothers and sisters, if someone claims to have faith but has no deeds? Can such faith save them? 15 Suppose a brother or a sister is without clothes and daily food. 16 If one of you says to them, “Go in peace; keep warm and well fed,” but does nothing about their physical needs, what good is it? 17 In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead.

18 But someone will say, “You have faith; I have deeds.”

Show me your faith without deeds, and I will show you my faith by my deeds. 19 You believe that there is one God. Good! Even the demons believe that—and shudder.

20 You foolish person, do you want evidence that faith without deeds is useless[d]? 21 Was not our father Abraham considered righteous for what he did when he offered his son Isaac on the altar? 22 You see that his faith and his actions were working together, and his faith was made complete by what he did. 23 And the scripture was fulfilled that says, “Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness,”[e] and he was called God’s friend. 24 You see that a person is considered righteous by what they do and not by faith alone.

25 In the same way, was not even Rahab the prostitute considered righteous for what she did when she gave lodging to the spies and sent them off in a different direction? 26 As the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without deeds is dead.

Closest I can think of is when Gillian Anderson was David Bowie in an episode of American Gods.
