When he first encounters her in S1, he tells her his name for the night is Adonis. Adonis is a reborn deity who was the surrogate son/lover of both Aphrodite and Persephone, who died in Aphrodite’s arms + his blood causes flowers to grow. Which is exactly what Lasher’s blood does in Mayfair Witches.

There is also Cybele and Attis. He is associated as both her son and her consort. In Goddesses, Attis is mentioned as a reborn deity along side Osiris, Adonis, and Jesus. Now there can be immediate parallels made to Osiris and Horus. However Mayfair Witches has already associated Lasher with Adonis.

In her Handbook of Egyptian Mythology, Geraldine Pinch explored how Hathor functions as daughter, consort and mother of Ra the Sun god. She is part of the rebirth cycle of the Sun, and this is just another example of this Mother Goddess being a consort to her son.

Maria Münster points out that at a certain point Hathor and Isis are indistinguishable in their iconography. Furthermore, Hathor’s name evolved from Het-Hert meaning “the House or Womb Above” to Hat-Hor meaning “the House or Womb of Horus”.

Gods, Goddesses, and Mythology, Volume 4 brings up how Isis is also at times seen as Horus’s consort. This association comes from the fluctuation of Egyptian myth and associations Isis has with Horus-the-Elder and also with Hathor, sometimes the wife and sometimes the mother of Horus.

S2 repeatedly brings up the fact that Rowan and Lasher are lovers, but also that they are now mother and son. They also blur the lines between them and their longing for one another repeatedly. Of course, this is all par for the course when it comes to Gods.

Over time this earth mother goddess became associated with a son, and then with a consort, who was also frequently her son. This is a very key point. Earlier we touched on how the alchemical union of Rowan and Lasher in S1 created the alchemical child, which is Lasher Reborn.

Gods, Goddesses, and Mythology, Volume 4 talks about how the work of Marija Gimbutas helped establish the earth mother as more than a sex and fertility goddess. She was a primary object of worship and had the ability to create life. She would welcome the dead into herself where they would be reborn.

She was already symbolically the life/death/life goddess that Dr. Clarissa Pinkola Estes talks about, but with the added Taltos abilities and affinity, Rowan is even further tied to the archetype of the Earth Mother Goddess.

THE EARTH MOTHER GODDESS AND HER SON CONSORT When Rowan drinks Lasher’s blood, she is imbued with an incredible amount of power. She has the healing and life giving ability of the Taltos, which we see with the earth around her immediately flourishing with flowers and thick grass.

Julien requires the blood of Lasher to gain immense power, just as the Old Man requires the blood of three young men. Both pressure the young girl and Rowan to consume the blood as well, which would make them bound to these undead malevolent entities.

The ghost of Julien Mayfair haunts and plagues the Mayfairs, and is fixated on Rowan in particular especially after she visits his ghost inside his Victrola which is reminiscent of the grave that the Old Man latches onto the young girl from.

BLOOD SACRIFICES While The Blood-Drawing Ghost is the main tale I want to talk about, there are others that use blood as the means to cure a deathly sleep (Pajaro Verde is one). However this Irish folktale is eerily similar to what happens in Mayfair Witches S2.

In the second death scene, Rowan gives him the kiss of life which is most common is Sleeping Beauty type tales. However it is also in Grimms’ The True Bride which shares similarities with East O’ the Sun, West O’ the Moon. This gesture is very important so we will return to this.

The Ninth Captain’s Tale also shares similarities with Rowan and Lasher. Sittukhan is revived from a death like sleep just as Rowan is saved from death by Lasher in S1. Sittukhan also raises her lover from his own deathly sleep later in the story and as we have discussed, Rowan saves Lasher in S2.

Rowan is on a quest to find Lasher, who is being imprisoned by the evil Scottish side of Rowan’s family. Lasher like the prince, is being arranged to marry in a few days. They keep them apart. When the heroine finds her prince he is unconscious, and when Rowan finds Lasher he has been brainwashed.

THE SLEEPING PRINCE There are some other notable ATU-425 tales of this kind that match up staggeringly well so let’s go through them one at a time. Starting with East O’ the Sun and West O’ the Moon. The heroine is on a quest to find her love, and finds him imprisoned by an evil family.

Every classic depiction of The Beast’s death has him lying in a green field surrounded by flowers where The Beauty finds him before bringing him back. We see this in both of Lasher’s “death” scenes in this season. So the parallels are there both narratively and visually.

Lasher grapples with a beastly nature throughout the season. He repents his past evils and wants to be a force for good. Furthermore he has a Princely reveal. Not only is he the literal son of a queen, but his nature as a Taltos is a genuine force for good. A handsome prince under the beastly skin.

SEASON ONE MOTIF RECAP Lasher is the manifestation of Rowan’s Shadow, and her journey through that season is the integration of her Shadow aspect. We see this come to fruition in their alchemical union. A union which indeed creates the alchemical child. This is something we will come back to.

In both cases, these Maidens transition out of this Arc through the death-rebirth of their Predator antagonist. The Predator representing their inner conflict. Whilst their Authority Figures are outer conflicts, which control the societal dynamics suppressing Rowan and Louis. FIN.

In the finale of S1 Rowan finished her transitions from Maiden to Hero. Whilst Louis stays a Vixen half of Season One, and becomes a Damsel toward the final half before becoming a Hero. Both are Heroes by the end of their first seasons.

Rowan herself embodies Hel the Goddess of Life and Death, her magic being something to kill or to heal. And literally incubates and facilitates Lasher’s rebirth. Reborn Lasher also deals with the evil he has done/his nature as a “Beast” which makes him the redeemable Predator or Animal Husband.

This is followed by that acknowledgment Weiland talks about. Lestat takes ownership for his behaviour, and does not continue to try and posses Louis through manipulations and control, instead lets him grow. Live his life. Thus allowing for Lestat’s redemption as the Predator.

Dr. Clarissa Pinkola Estés talks about the ending of the Bluebeard tale and how his death allows him to be dismembered, incubated, and reborn—redeemed. We see how Lestat is similarly disposed of. Literally thrown in the trash. Then given time to slowly gestate and reemerge from his coffin.

Louis remains in the underworld for a significant amount of time, succumbing often to devolutions in his character arc. But eventually with the help of his Protector, his anima—Claudia—Louis is able to slay the beast. Just as the bride is helped by her sister(s) to defeat Bluebeard.

Both Lasher and Lestat bridal carry Rowan and Louis, crossing thresholds to their lairs, and toward beds for consummation of union. These are characteristics of raptus and themes compatible with Death and the Maiden or Hades and Persephone. But will these Maidens remain in the underworld?

The Predator always wants a willing bride/groom, and is initially persuasive and seductive, typically presenting themselves as having the answers the Protagonist needs to get away from their old restrictive world. Lestat’s alter proposal, and Lasher’s thrall are both these scenes.

THE PREDATOR — The typical depictions of The Predator are seen in “The Seven Wives of Bluebeard” and “The Girl Without Hands.” Lasher’s key in the show was directly influenced by Bluebeard. Meanwhile Lestat “breaking” Louis is reminiscent of the rejected Devil cutting off the girl’s hands.

Louis shamefully suppresses who he truly is, and sacrifices his own integrity to do disreputable work that will make money. It even leads him toward aggressive behaviour he feels guilt about. This also doesn’t stop after he becomes a vampire, as he is still trying to exist in his old world.

For Louis this antagonistic archetype is also best identified as abstract because it is the system with which he as a gay black man in 1910s New Orleans must contend, in order to provide for his family. This is the root of where his shadow archetype of a vixen originates. This is “Louis the Pimp”.

She has many Authority Figures: Cortland the Naive Father who “sacrifices” the Maiden. Carlotta the Devouring Mother. Thus, she becomes dependant on everyone else to save her, to tell her how to use her power + to have the answers. She runs from Authority figure to Authority figure for protection.
