Trans people have been warning y'all for years that they were perfecting tactics on us to use on everyone else. The reporter of this piece, Christina Jewett, contributed to that too. She helped fuel the moral panic over puberty blockers in trans youth. www.nytimes.com/2026/10/05/h...

Ken Paxton, the Texas attorney general and Republican Senate candidate, has alleged a sprawling profit-driven conspiracy. Pediatricians say the accusations are an attempt at intimidation.

Seriously. Most of medicine, as a field of practice, has no concept of a professional duty for what we might term psychological responsibility – a duty to get on top of one's kneejerk reactions – the way we do in psychotherapy and more broadly in psychiatry. And it badly needs one.

Yes and no. People have been finding it a problem that you can't have music without musicians (and, worse, have to – horrors! – *pay* the musicians) for centuries. Probably millennia, but I only have receipts back to the Middle Ages.

There's this perennial touching faith that health insurance companies, because they are businesses, must be responsive to financial incentives, and will respond rationally to information to maximize revenues. Apparently not.

Speaking as a medical professional in the US, I am perpetually amazed at the extent to which insurance companies relentlessly demonstrate an inability to figure out just which side their bread is buttered on.

I kinda feel like if you make someone listen to Choosing Texas, you are morally obligated to also introduce them to at least one country song that doesn't suck.

So I told my spouse about the Choosing Texas controversy, and he'd never heard of it either. So we fired up YT and listened to it. So then to make it up to him, I played him Bryan Andrew's "Yeehaw". I can now hear faint occasional YEEHAWs lofting up from the kitchen. youtu.be/yTZahJfAMds

It is like the perfect example of something people would naturally think, "oh God could an AI just do this for me? That would be swell." Turns out: no, actually, you can't trust an AI to do this. As understandable as it is that you might wish that you could.

I entirely agree that one shouldn't take the risk. But let's not minimize the almighty hassle listing something for sale online can be. Dumb questions, insulting offers, weird behaviors, getting ghosted, and just the tedium of trying to schedule pick-ups.

Fascists are entirely invested in the idea that suffering is not bad, causing suffering is not bad, and the right response to suffering is "suck it up". Psychotherapy's basic premise is that suffering is a problem to be solved, and psychotherapists keep running around telling people that.
1100
Siderea, Sibylla Bostoniensis @siderea.bsky.social · 27/09/2026
A fundamental core to the fascist belief system is that individuals have no intrinsic worth and should/get to be subordinated to the state like livestock. A fundamental principle psychotherapy is that the individual has intrinsic worth and value just for being a human being.

Siderea, Sibylla Bostoniensis @siderea.bsky.social · 27/09/2026
This is absolutely true. Another, complementary, reason is that conservatives are also authoritarians, and authoritarians have been (correctly) identifying the liberatory potential of psychotherapy as inimical to their project of domination.

Case in point: nobody needed to do research on *men* to be convinced that when *men* scream, puke, or pass out in response to medically caused tissue damage it's bc they're actually feeling actual pain, and that their pain is itself a medical problem in need of treatment.
0140
Siderea, Sibylla Bostoniensis @siderea.bsky.social · 24/09/2026
That's certainly true, and also a huge problem. But you don't need to *research* to provide adequate analgesia to women, you just have to think they're people.

I get the impression – from Superstorm Sandy and Hurricane Katrina first and foremost – the hospitals don't plan for disasters happening to themselves.

I'm guessing the mass casualty disaster drills your facility runs are the kind where the mass casualty disaster happens somewhere else, and the patients are transported to you. Not the kind where the mass casualty happens at your facility and you have to transport the patients somewhere else.

Unquestionably, but I suspect that practical considerations had nothing to do with the decision, and that security details are being used as a status symbol allocated to the loyal, so they can have an armed entourage for show. Fauci, remember, had to pay for his own.

(This should not be construed as suggesting HVAC in non-residential buildings *isn't* stupid. I just have a particular interest in residential construction.)
000
Siderea, Sibylla Bostoniensis @siderea.bsky.social · 23/09/2026
Anyways, I've been grumbling about Why Is HVAC* So Stupid In Residential Buildings for years now. * Expressly including passive forms. Am also salty how the term "HVAC" has come to mean exclusive *mechanical* systems.
100
Siderea, Sibylla Bostoniensis @siderea.bsky.social · 23/09/2026
And then there's Europe, which apparently doesn't do AC at all.
100
Siderea, Sibylla Bostoniensis @siderea.bsky.social · 23/09/2026
Even large multifamily dwellings, unless they are quite recent construction, don't necessarily have centralized AC. Any older apartment building with steam heat or electric baseboard heat, is unlikely to have any duct work at all, much less exterior air intakes.

Siderea, Sibylla Bostoniensis @siderea.bsky.social · 23/09/2026
That thread is super interesting to me but also initially confusing. When you say "typical building" you mean "typical *industrial/office* building with *central AC*". AFAIK, the vast majority of *residential* bldgs in CA & US *don't even have an exterior air intake*.

Pretty sure that person wasn't disagreeing with your point that the Israelis are terrible, just that you clearly have no idea what you're talking about. Your heart seems to be in the right place, but your head could do with some relocating. Anyways, muting you now.

Right?! Qv Fetterman, Platner. It's like what the DNC is doing is going, "We have to appeal to blue collar voters. Hmmm, what do they like? Oh I know! Bigotry and crime! Who do we have who is a very naughty boy?"

Siderea, Sibylla Bostoniensis @siderea.bsky.social · 18/09/2026
Usually fascist governments try to lock their populace inside their countries, e.g. the Iron Curtain. Not turn them out. Because fascist governments usually see their populace as livestock, and value them as such.

You may have not picked up on the implication of Netanyahu's threat: to revoke someone's citizenship is to leave them *stateless*. That is a big, big, big fucking deal. It is also unusual.

Siderea, Sibylla Bostoniensis @siderea.bsky.social · 18/09/2026
I think what you're trying to say is "you can tell that this is bad because it's something that Putin does". That is weak sauce that badly understates the case.
200
Siderea, Sibylla Bostoniensis @siderea.bsky.social · 18/09/2026
Yeeeah, no. It's the fucking with citizenship thing which is catastrophic. It is something so beyond, even Putin doesn't do it. For ANY state to do this is a VERY big deal. But within the context of Jewish culture and religion, this is like a nuclear bomb going off.
010
Siderea, Sibylla Bostoniensis @siderea.bsky.social · 18/09/2026
It is something more profound than merely ironic. I can only speak for myself, of course, but as an American Jew with no intention of ever pursuing Israeli citizenship, reading that made my breath catch. That is some shattering-the-Dark-Crystal type stuff. If they do that, Israel is no longer Zion.

States that want to engage in voter suppression get the natural consequence of having fewer Reps in the House.
030
Siderea, Sibylla Bostoniensis @siderea.bsky.social · 08/09/2026
This all is reminding me this loophole is still there. If we ever get it together as a country, we should consider amending the Constitution to make seats in the House depend not on total population but on the voting population.
120
Siderea, Sibylla Bostoniensis @siderea.bsky.social · 08/09/2026
So long as seats in the House were allocated by total population, slaver states could, grotesquely, simply breed themselves more Representatives – and by that means take over Congress. A phenomenon abolitionists called Slave Power.
110
Siderea, Sibylla Bostoniensis @siderea.bsky.social · 08/09/2026
It may have had knock-on effects, but insisting the enslaved do not count towards how many seats in the House a state gets was an attempt to limit the efficacy of force-breeding humans as a kind of gerrymander.
