Notice 79% voter turnout, which seems like a lot but in a country where voting is mandatory, conveys a lot of public disaffection from the political system, like everywhere else. Anyway there are a lot of heads here with insight so let's see how they map out the scenarios.

I had missed initial coverage a few months ago but it seems pianist Jacky Terrasson (Paris-based, has worked with a lot of NYC musicians) has an abundant history of sexual assault that was an industry open-secret. He's just been criminally charged w/ sexual assault on a 6-year-old, ten years ago.

Perhaps it's NYC myopia but from my POV the most encouraging recent development from the SAA political field has been the Mamdani campaign's success at organizing and mobilizing across the many toxic SAA "community" divisions, showing there's a way. (Hint: Engage ALL the aunties.)

Siddhartha Mitter @siddharthamitter.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
I suspect the SAA solidary/anti-racist and internationalist left endures and renews, BUT is on its own island relative to the "community" — accentuated by its disgust at grotesques like Kash, Dhillon etc. — and likely more invested in continuing movement work "outside" than addressing internally.
170
Siddhartha Mitter @siddharthamitter.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
My sense (but there are others here with likely a closer analysis) is that the SAA "community" — a wobbly concept from the start for many reasons — is now basically riven with schisms. There's a lot of loathing.

Of course that was 2001; since then, political-economy developments in US and South Asia have sharpened stakes. Hindutva fascist rule in India, Modi-Netanyahu alignment, Ambani/Adani billionaire power, etc., all participate in rewarding complicity and expanding the permission structure for bigotry.

Of course, part of Bardella's initial argument that the messages were fakes rested on his support for Israel, his warm welcome there etc. And while mainstream French Jewish organizations are condemning him, there's a wing of pro-fascist Jewish groups already talking about the value of forgiveness

The @mediapart.fr investigation provides a sociology of the new fascist sphere with its hardcore antisemitic "thinkers" and eager young followers pumping their ideas into politics. Same as in US, UK etc. Also, Mediapart's sources get very close to Bardella, so knives are clearly out for him.
