Abuse can gradually undermine a person’s sense of safety & identity.Victims often develop low self-esteem, anxiety, fear, depression, shame & persistent self-doubt after repeated gaslighting. The damaging effects can continue long after the abuse ends. #SoroptimistBristol #StandingUpForWomenAndGirls

Same qualifications. Same experience. Different name, different outcome. 🤔 Research found that identical applicants were evaluated differently based on perceived gender, including the starting salary they were offered. So what happens when that difference follows someone through a career? 🧵

Ornithologist Florence Merriam Bailey popularized #birdwatching for everyday people. Her 1889 book, Birds Through an Opera-Glass, laid the foundation for modern birdwatching by advocating for live observation rather than shooting birds for study. She was born #OTD 1863. #WomenInSTEM #BookSky
A black-and-white photograph of pioneering American ornithologist Florence Merriam Bailey (August 8, 1863 – March 19, 1948). The left two-thirds shows Bailey standing outdoors. She has light-colored hair pulled up in an elegant updo from the late 19th century, looking directly forward with a calm, serious, and dignified expression. She wears a long, light-colored, vertically striped Victorian dress with full sleeves and a high collar. Standing behind leafy branches, she is surrounded by thick foliage and trees, emphasizing her connection to nature. Overlaid on the bottom right is an inset image of a modern blue book cover for her landmark 1889 work, Birds Through an Opera-Glass. The textured blue background features gold-gilded, intricate corner filigree framing a central golden bird perched on a branch. Text reads "The First-Ever Field Guide to American Birds" in a central diamond. The composition seamlessly pairs historical portraiture with her enduring literary legacy, evoking an academic, respectful, and pioneering mood.

Computer scientist Margaret Hamilton coined the term “software engineer.” She directed the Software Engineering Division at MIT’s Instrumentation Lab & led development of the on-board flight software for NASA’s Apollo Guidance Computer. She was born #OTD in 1936 & turns 90 today! #WomenInSTEM
Two side-by-side black-and-white photographs of pioneering computer scientist Margaret Hamilton (born August 17, 1936). The left panel features a mature, close-up portrait where Hamilton gazes directly at the viewer with a serene, confident, and reflective expression, framed by her long, dark, slightly silvering hair. The right panel is a famous archival photograph showing a younger Hamilton standing indoors next to a towering stack of bound paper binders containing the Apollo Guidance Computer source code, which she led the development of at MIT. She is smiling broadly and wears a striped, long-sleeved mini dress with dark Mary Jane shoes and glasses, resting her hand proudly on top of the massive column of printed code. The overall composition contrasts her youthful triumph with her enduring legacy, capturing an optimistic, intellectually rigorous mood that highlights her monumental contributions to space exploration.
