There is good news for Shetland pelagic fishermen after the north-east Atlantic mackerel stock was more than doubled for next year following the recent scientific assessment by the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea.

An NSTA report shows that production of oil equivalent from the UK continental shelf, including west, north-east and east of Shetland, was more cost-efficient last year, with spending per barrel 9 percent lower than in 2024.

Norwegian Fisherman's Association has criticised Norwegian Directorate of Fisheries after the 41 metre Norwegian pelagic boat Einar Erlend was escorted into Lerwick harbour on Tuesday night by the fisheries protection vessel Hirta and fined £4000 for lack of documentation for fishing for mackerel.

About 23 percent of households in Shetland use heating oil as their primary source of central heating. Now the Scottish Emergency Heating Oil Scheme, which was introduced in April to support low-income households struggling with the cost of heating oil, has been extended into winter.

Norwegian energy company Statkraft has sold its green hydrogen and ammonia projects in Shetland to Norwegian-owned Kentron Green Nordic, one undeveloped project being at Scatsta Airport and the other, also undeveloped, at Tagdale on the east side of Dales Voe.

Police Scotland said that on Friday evening it had received a report that a possible ordnance device had been discovered at the rear of the Town Hall in Lerwick. A police cordon was put in place around the area and it was arranged for an explosiv to assess the device.

Cable ship CS Sovereign, which has done much of the cable repairs around Shetland and Orkney in recent years, is 50 nautical miles west-south-west Sumburgh for emergency repairs on the six year old Havfrue America-Europe Connect-2 submarine fibre optic cable from New Jersey to Blaabjerg in Denmark.

The Shetland Charitable Trust is holding its AGM on Thursday when the audited accounts for the year, to the end of March, will be signed off by the volunteer trustees. They will hear that the value of all of the trust’s funds stood at £453.9 million at the end. of the financial year.

After five days for a rest stay at Holmsgarth 5 in Lerwick harbour, the 20 year old, 102 metre, French naval vessel Dupuy de Lôme, is to due leave to join a High-North Nato fleet keeping an eye on Russian naval activity around Shetland and as far north as Svaldbard.

The coastguard S92 helicopter based at Sumburgh was tasked to go to the NorthLink passenger ferry Hjaltland, which was in the Fair Isle Channel 8 nautical miles south-south-west of Sumburgh while on the way to Kirkwall and then Aberdeen. A passenger on board was in need of medical attention.
