i think i might boycott youtube at some point, not for any ethical reasoning but i think this might be bad for the brain yo
stop guessing what hooks you audience with video a/b testing you can test up to 3 edits of a short or video simultaneously. review the stats, pick the clear winner, and seamlessly lock it in as your video.

Watched Wolf Children, i feel like how it ends was complete mercy from the director though when you think about it: it makes Jin Roh look like a happy ending.

I loved warren spectors interview/lecture series because he'll randomly pause just to gush about the Dragonslayer movie or some animation history.

refactored it so followers and players are the same thing because why not

they now can be moved as if they were the player(cutscene), then be frozen to be animated(puppet), then put into fighting game character mode(combat). they'll likely cycle between these 3 states in the actual battle. nerd trivia: they repurpose lucca's north draw gun animation for side
lucca north drawing gun animation vs side, it's sligggggggggghtly different but less work i guess

shweep @shweep.dev · 15/08/2026
took me a whole ass morning just to get them to take out their weapons, but with the music i can easily manifest the battle system without a single line of code

apparently secret of evermore basically had RPG Maker-esque eventing in 1994 for non programmers. still curious about what these tools looked like
NL: Can you tell us a little about the S.A.G.E. (Square's Amazing Graphical Editor) and the S.I.G.I.L. (Square Interpreted Game Intelligence Language) programs that were used to help create Secret of Evermore?
Outside the bijou

BF: SAGE was a custom Mac application that allowed you to edit all graphical components of the game, including tiles, maps, characters, animations, effects, that sort of thing. It was also capable of hooking up with some simple SNES test hardware so the artist could run around the map with a real character and test things. That also allowed them to see their work on a real NTSC television, whose colorspace is a strange and wicked thing, quite unlike their computer monitor.

Conceptually, SAGE wasn't terribly complicated. Typically, you'd collect a small palette of tiles on the left from the larger set available to the whole game, and then arrange those somehow in a large work area on the right. On a map, you'd have a palette of 256 16x16 tiles that you could place in various layers of a large gridded map, and have them sort in clever ways to make things like fences or waist-deep water. With a character/animation, you'd instead arrange a set of 8x8 and 16x16 tiles in a totally arbitrary manner, to minimally cover the area of the current frame of animation. Character/sprite tiles are at a premium on a SNES, so you must be very economical.SIGIL was a simple, high-level scripting language. It could do full mathematical expressions and shuffle variables around as you might expect, but its core functions were higher concepts like WALKTO, TURNLEFT, WAITFOR, (go to) MAP, and tons of similar stuff for controlling scripted scenes, entrances/exits from maps, and game states. These could reference named map locations, triggers, animations, etc. that were set up in SAGE. All of this made it much easier for a novice to work in the language: you didn't need to be a trained programmer, and you usually didn't need numbers. At the same time, the tools were there for programmers to do more complicated things. SIGIL turned out pretty well.

In case any of your tech-minded readers are interested: under the hood, SIGIL was tokenized into bytes, used reverse polish representation for expressions, had local/map/global scope for variables, and could run multiple scripts in parallel.

making cutscene tooling foundations, i feel like this aspect of game development is the least talked about and yet it dominates every game with a semblance of a story

i find chrono trigger on steam so sad because obviously there's no 1 way for how to convert snes games to widescreen, so the potential ways to mess it up multiply ie having so much random empty space that makes no sense when isolated in context.
boxes are so stretched

shweep @shweep.dev · 08/08/2026
taking certain liberties... doing an ff7 message box style to avoid having so much empty space in the widescreen. i am also too lazy to do the gradient effect

1 random detail is the running animations are usually just walks sped up with 2 frames changed (contacts) EXCEPT marle's side walk has unique frames with hair constantly up because of momentum. someone's looking out for marle

Playing on ps3 (so more pixelated) but they clearly put effort in making the 3d models look good as if they were 2d sprites in just about every angle due to the proportions and distinct colors.

watched the last ep of TADC in the theatre, overall the show reminds me of that one Voyager episode where human fear itself manifests in a VR program. Both I think work the narrative well without resorting to dream logic or being too abstract
