Shroomius @shroomius.itch.io · 6hthis isnt even like most situations where i can kinda see if anything happened and could vaguely be justification, but nope all the stuff i posted in the last month or two has just been movie reviews 010
Shroomius @shroomius.itch.io · 9hI specifically say this because specifically in the case of SMB, the lives system to me feels like an instant reset at some points. Or if you're playing really well it just kinda fades away. 100
Shroomius @shroomius.itch.io · 10hBut if we're talking about having more dynamism, indefinite structure and secondary objectives to the genre then 100%. 000
Shroomius @shroomius.itch.io · 10hWhich either boil down to speed or completion as the performance metric, I feel like adding lives/score to that would either be redundant or serve to make this type of game more reset heavy than they are. 200
Shroomius @shroomius.itch.io · 10hsome blend of endurance/consistency challenge (source surfing, geometry dash, defrag slick maps) and resource management/routing challenge (defrag combo maps, tf2 jump). 100
Shroomius @shroomius.itch.io · 10hI agree but (assuming the stages are static and finite) the problem moreso just seems to be overly generous checkpointing when it comes to making the challenges seem more disposable. When there's less checkpoints the transition from each individual challenge starts to matter more and creates- 210

Shroomius @shroomius.itch.io · 05/10/2026combat arms, just by being f2p was able to be something that was still getting players during the cod series' top years and still has it's fragmovie freaks caring about it youtu.be/gCISblLJ5Zwyoutu.beBROKE RECORDS || XONADO COMBAT ARMSYouTube video by xonado CA BR 100
Shroomius @shroomius.itch.io · 04/10/2026and i guess i did because even though combat arms was a z-tier shooter it just reminds me that there was genuinely a time where, if an online game just had a mild advertising budget and could keep it's servers up regularly, it would just passively accumulate players 100

Shroomius @shroomius.itch.io · 04/10/2026judge for yourself but i dont think this using ai is the worst thing ever, just very lame, not cj-shadowstep tier imo 010
Shroomius @shroomius.itch.io · 04/10/2026in their history (they're a 3d artist oustide of this), looking at the scripts there's very weird comments that are kinda hard to write off in the way that weird code comments usually are (and also they use 3 slashes for comments when rust only needs 2 iirc) github.com/deltarooo/er... 210
Shroomius @shroomius.itch.io · 04/10/2026the mod's repo is public, sm64 itself has existed for a while before this recent stuff, it doesn't have the usual tells of ai stuff like having claude as a contributor, but the author's github account was made the day the mod was posted and they seem to have nothing modding/programming related- 120

Shroomius @shroomius.itch.io · 04/10/2026id say my only gripes with it is that the early game is always kinda boring and that the crt shader gets to be a bit much and i wish i could just turn it off 000

Shroomius @shroomius.itch.io · 04/10/20260 game dev experience 0 productive discussions about games 7 more inflammatory tweets about random games to incite arguments 030
Shroomius @shroomius.itch.io · 04/10/2026excluding mechanics in order to have more fun should be an extra thing on top of a good game. lvl 1 rpg full game runs, action game challenges where you don't use certain moves, restricting elements in an emergent sandbox game. stuff like that shouldn't be the prerequisite for the game being fun 040
Shroomius @shroomius.itch.io · 04/10/2026and for some communities it becomes a dumb debate over whether or not you should do it, where the alternative is just, the game being designed in a way where you don't have to pretend parts of it don't exist in order to have fun 120
Shroomius @shroomius.itch.io · 04/10/2026the optimal strategy existing carries itself over any time it's applicable, especially if pivoting to it isn't difficult, and if there's more than one of them, it creates this very goofy situation in some of these games where people are adding their own rules so the game doesn't fall apart 120
Shroomius @shroomius.itch.io · 04/10/2026and "dont do the optimal strategy so you can have fun" is usually such a weak argument because it only really works when the optimal strategy is so far out of the way and isn't just something you can do with some mild critical thinking, fancy execution and overuse of a declared game mechanic 130
Shroomius @shroomius.itch.io · 04/10/2026or less ludo-narratively, "the developers want interacting with more of the game to be less fun the more you do of it." 130
Shroomius @shroomius.itch.io · 04/10/2026but it can (sometimes) still be up to interpretation, but i doubt many developers want a substantial amount of their player's reading of their game to be "the hero now encounters no challenges ever because they decided to help some townspeople out a couple times."- 130
Shroomius @shroomius.itch.io · 04/10/2026and adding to that, when caring about these textual elements in these other works, noticing a detail that negatively affects the whole work is a pretty notable thing, "this character's motivation in this scene makes no sense, and the story just keeps treating it like it does" type of shit 130
Shroomius @shroomius.itch.io · 04/10/2026its caring about the art, on a base level. people critique novels on how their prose is written, a film's shot composition, a song's instrumentation, i find it very odd that people are weirdly adverse to critiquing how a game's design affect how the game plays. 120
Shroomius @shroomius.itch.io · 04/10/2026people usually equate this to how art can have different interpretations and in this type of situation the Optimizing Player just has a weird interpretation, but its like, in most mediums, caring about the literal textual elements that the work displays isn't a "weird interpretation",- 130
Shroomius @shroomius.itch.io · 04/10/2026that shouldn't be "oh they optimized the fun out of the game dont pay attention to them" it's, "they played the game, actively caring about it's own logic and their reward for caring is that the game is completely uninteresting now." 130
Shroomius @shroomius.itch.io · 04/10/2026and then you back up WHY this makes the game less enjoyable in XYZ way to tie the whole critical point together. e.g "this rpg has a bunch of sidequests with high exp payouts, and as a consequence of me just doing all of them, the majority of the combat encounters end in a single turn." 120
Shroomius @shroomius.itch.io · 04/10/2026does it just invalidate one enemy's existence? one level? does the optimal strategy cause a cascading effect wherein, just by doing it everything is easier? is [central mechanic] just a worse version of the optimal strategy, and therefore redundant? 130
Shroomius @shroomius.itch.io · 04/10/2026and when this situation happens, the points to critique are how the design breaks down. is the optimal strategy too simple? too easy to execute? extremely boring? unintuitive? counter to everything else the game is designed around? And to what extent does it break the game?- 140
Shroomius @shroomius.itch.io · 04/10/2026the whole point of "players will optimize the fun out of a game" advice is that you should design a game wherein optimal play is still fun. if players are trying to play with all the fun toys you put in and by playing with them how they're designed breaks the game, then the game isn't designed well. 1100
Shroomius @shroomius.itch.io · 04/10/2026getting slightly discoursian again, this time about how people are responding to this bog post, and with some of the responses it genuinely seems like some people have never played games where getting better at them is the entire thing the game is about 191
Shroomius @shroomius.itch.io · 04/10/2026I think, while there are definitely more noticeable errors all around despite my new strats, the biggest one is that I break BOTH GEMS when going for the second powerup, it definitely would've been a better endgame with a better score if i only broke one and used the other for a homing shot 000
Shroomius @shroomius.itch.io · 03/10/2026this one i thought was kinda ass up until i realized i was ahead in pace when the 2nd powerup spawned 100
