Meet Duobrachium sparksae: a newly described comb jelly that looks like a glowing hot-air balloon drifting just above the deep seafloor. Transparent, delicate, and unmistakably transfixing, it reminds us how much biodiversity is in the deep oceans. www.fisheries.noaa.gov/feature-stor...

The Office of Long COVID Research and Practice will close as soon as this week, according to an internal HHS email obtained by Inside Medicine. This is the opposite of what you would do if you were genuinely interested in finding treatments for chronic diseases, as RFK claims.
Here is the text of the email:

Dear Colleagues,

We are writing to let you know that the Office of Long COVID Research and Practice will be closing as part of the administration’s reorganization coming this week. We are proud of what we have accomplished together in advancing understanding, resources, and support for people living with Long COVID.

Over the last 3+ years, we have built meaningful connections and fruitful collaborations across the federal landscape to support this work. While our office is closing, we hope that the work we have been dedicated to will continue in some form. Updates will be shared as they become available.

Thank you again for your collaboration and commitment.

Best regards,

Ian Simon, Ph.D.

Director, Office of Long COVID Research and Practice

Office of the Assistant Secretary for Health

Re mask bans: sunglasses conceal people's identity more effectively than masks do, but everyone would object to a sunglasses ban. The difference is that sunglasses are completely normalized accessibility devices, while masks have been pathologized as part of the total erasure of the pandemic.

I keep having to tell people eugenics didn’t start with Trump. It’s quite literally the foundation of America and needs to be discussed as such.

NGC 1514 (MIRI image). M. Hakan Özsaraç Science NASA, ESA, CSA, STScI www.flickr.com/photos/mhozs...
This mid-infrared image from MIRI showcases the planetary nebula NGC 1514, often called Crystal Ball Nebula. It appears as a roughly spherical, glowing cloud with a complex structure. The nebula exhibits a range of colors, from a bright white outer shell to a mottled interior of red, pink, and blue hues, suggesting varying temperatures and compositions of the ejected stellar material. A bright central star is visible at the nebula's core, surrounded by a faint, star-like halo. The dark background is sprinkled with a few distant stars, while the bottom right corner of the image includes text stating "Processing M. Hakan Özsaraç Science NASA, ESA, CSA, STScI".

Tomorrow's NASA Astronomy Picture Of the Day (APOD): baby solar system HH 30. ESA/Webb, NASA & CSA, Tazaki et al.
A close-in image of a protoplanetary disc around a newly formed star. Many different wavelengths of light are combined and represented by separate and various colours. A dark line across the centre is the disc, corresponding to the densest parts of the disc, made of opaque dust: the star is hidden in here and creates a strong glow in the centre. A band going straight up is a jet, while other outflows above and below the disc, and a tail coming off to one side

The Stonewall National Monument has shamefully erased all mentions of transgender and queer people, in an attempt to rewrite history and deny the contributions of trans people to the LGBTQ+ rights movement. Read more via @out.com: www.out.com/news/transge...

This is the clearest photo ever taken of Venus. 🔭 🧪
This is a cropped, close-up image of the planet Venus, taken by the Parker Solar Probe’s WISPR instrument. The image shows a crescent Venus against the black backdrop of space, with the edge of the planetary limb clearly defined. The crescent is illuminated by sunlight, transitioning from a bright, almost white glow at the top right edge to a subtle, golden yellow that dominates the majority of the illuminated area, before fading into the darkness of the planet's night side at the bottom left. The distinct variations in brightness and texture across the crescent suggest cloud formations or atmospheric layers. A bright, flaring light source is visible at the top right corner, likely the Sun, which contributes to the illumination of the crescent. The overall composition emphasizes the stark contrast between the luminous crescent and the surrounding darkness, highlighting the curvature and celestial context of Venus.

Light continues to echo three years after stellar outburst. V838 Monocerotis by Hubble. 🔭 🧪
This Hubble Space Telescope image showcases V838 Monocerotis, a variable star enveloped in a stunning, expanding nebula. The nebula, a complex structure of dust and gas ejected from the star, appears reddish-brown and resembles a ruffled, translucent shell. Swirls and layers within the nebula are visible, illuminated by the star's central glow and punctuated by bright, star-like glints. Numerous background stars add to the scene's depth, creating a captivating visual representation of this dynamic stellar environment.

JWST's "Cosmic Cliffs". 🔭 🧪
This is a NIRCam (Near-Infrared Camera) image from the James Webb Space Telescope of the "Cosmic Cliffs" in the Carina Nebula. The image is dominated by textured formations of gas and dust in warm tones of orange, brown, and gold, resembling a rugged cliff face. Bright, star-forming regions are visible within the cliffs, glowing with a soft light. The top portion of the image shows a transition to a deep blue, star-filled space. Numerous distinct stars are scattered throughout the image, some displaying a starburst effect from the telescope's optics.

Pyrosome passing through #ClearAPathPeople Pyrosomes are bioluminescent, producing brilliant blue-green light. Each zooid can detect and emit light in response, creating waves of bioluminescence up and down the organism's body. The name Pyrosoma comes from the Greek term meaning “fire body.”
