I just crossed 100 supporters on Buy Me A Coffee! I've been making and sharing projects on the web for the last few years, before and after AI became a thing, across a very nerdy confluence of creative coding and data viz. Your support has helped me break even on this hobby I love, so thank you!!

this visual about how stereo records work was one of the trickiest to build in the whole "how the heck?" series, but I'm happy with how it turned out! also was happy to use one of my own lofi tracks from a few years ago as the demo audio -- easiest way to not have to worry about a copyright!

this is insane to me. cereal mascots are a bastion of flashy and memorable marketing how do you expect to compete with Tony, the keeblers, the capn, etc with AI slop? also I love that it says "source of energy" on the top. like yes it's food

I've seen a few vibe coded apps that are basically "text messaging but with carrier pigeons" not that it matters, but I would like to submit for the record that I had this idea in 2016 and spent HOURS hacking together an Android prototype of it, barely knowing what I was doing 😂

one of my favorite themes in computer science: find a way to convert thing X from form A to form B, because we know how to optimize the shit out of form B that shows up here with JPEG compression, where we convert 8x8 pixel blocks into coefficients using discrete cosine transformation!

this tracks
From a 404 article:

The data suggests, perhaps unsurprisingly, that a huge portion of longform posts on LinkedIn and X’s new article format are fully AI-generated or AI-assisted (meaning drafted, edited, or rewritten by AI with some human elements). Forty percent of longform LinkedIn posts analyzed in the data were fully AI-written; a quarter of X articles were fully AI written, but another 23 percent of X articles were AI-assisted, the company said. It intuitively makes sense that longer form content is more likely to be AI-generated, because people usually won’t bother to AI-generate a few word response or a pithy comment on a quote tweet, for example. AI is also famously verbose, meaning AI-generated content is more likely to show up in longer posts.

messing around with a chart for our next newsletter: the top 16 teams in the WC broken down by the countries of the clubs their players play in! Colombia and Morocco have the most "diverse" teams by this metric with 13 and 12 clubs respectively England and Spain, unsurprisingly, only have 4
Sankey diagram showing where players from the 16 remaining World Cup national teams play club soccer, linking each national team to the country of their clubs; England is the largest destination, followed by Spain, France, Italy, and Germany.

this but michael scott is big tech, pizza by alfredo is AI-generated content, alfredo's pizza cafe is the internet before 2016, and the rest of the office is all of us
Michael Scott: Guess who just ordered from your favorite pizza place, Alfredo?
Kevin: Wait. Alfredo's pizza cafe? Or Pizza by Alfredo?
Michael Scott: Same thing. [everyone groans] You know what, I don't understand when you all talk at the same time!
Kevin: Oscar, talk to him.
Oscar: Michael, there's a very big difference between these two pizza places. Both in quality of ingredients and in overall taste. Which one did you order from?
Michael Scott: Pizza by Alfredo. [everyone groans] All right, you know what? Okay, okay. What is better, a medium amount of good pizza, or all you can eat of pretty good pizza?
All: A medium amount of good pizza.

a while ago, I shared an essay I wrote about AI music, featuring an experiment where the user had to guess which clip was real vs. AI a few thousand votes in, my suspicion feels validated: it's very hard to tell even with that, I feel very hopeful about human art perthirtysix.com/is-music-jus...

had some time this weekend to *manually* write some code to make a chart and it was great! this is a lil self-tracked data viz about my month walking it's a bit over the top, but for my audience of one, I really like the quintuple-encoded dots (temperature, steps, humidity, rain, and date)
