A living sea urchin larva, Arbacia punctulata, under a polychromatic polarizing microscope. Its calcite skeletal rods are birefringent. Here the hue encodes their slow-axis orientation, so the rods change color as the larva turns. No stains #Microscopy #SeaUrchin #Larva #Biomineralization #Plankton

Not one of these colors is pigment. A tardigrade under a polychromatic polarizing microscope. 40x, half speed. It's 0.2 mm long — small enough to sit inside a printed period. 🧵

Happy #MicroscopyMonday! This live image captures a larval sea anemone (Nematostella vectensis) that refracts light like a gemstone. The vibrant, true-color image highlights the organism’s birefringence. Imaged by @shribak.bsky.social) and @karenecheverri.bsky.social from the MBL’s Bell Center.

This polychromatic polarizing microscope image of 0.3µ thick calcite film shows real colors, as it is seen by naked eye. The vibrant colors are produced as the calcite crystals form, revealing their molecular orientation. Imaged by @shribak.bsky.social #MicroscopyMonday

A correlative quantitative phase contrast and fluorescence super-resolution microscope for imaging molecules in their cellular context
Fluorescence microscopy has been widely used to reveal the spatial distribution of specifically labeled molecules, but it is blind to cellular context. Quantitative phase contrast microscopy (QPC) pro...
