Avromi Kanal, a hospitalist and assistant professor of medicine, responded that while he was "horrified by every innocent death,"' he worried that a cease-fire would empower Hamas and encourage kidnapping for ransom.

Soon after he sent the email questioning a cease-fire resolution, Dr. Kanal learned that someone had forwarded it to another U.C.S.F. doctor, Rupa Marya, who practices internal medicine and said she focuses on how history and power affect health. She criticized his email on X multiple times over several months without naming him.
But later, in a Substack post, Dr. Marya did refer to him by name and called his email an
"expression of anti-Arab hate" that prompted doctors of South Asian and North African descent "to say they do not feel safe in his presenceại
Dr. Kanal said that he was shocked a colleague with whom he had never spoken had blasted him so publicly. He met with university leaders multiple times, but he said they took no action.
He then filed a complaint with the school's Office for the Prevention of Harassment and Discrimination, which responded that Dr.
Marya's speech was protected and closed the complaint.

I’ve read the article. And until you have a source for the student not existing besides “trust me, bro” I’m going to assume she was fired for cause. And I’m not sad about it.

The presence of Zionism in US medicine should be examined as a structural impediment to health equity. Zionism is a supremacist, racist ideology and we see Zionist doctors justifying the genocide of Palestinians. How does their outlook/position impact priorities in US medicine?

I love when people I’m fans of ( @drewmagary.bsky.social ) are fans of other people I’m a fan of ( @vincemancini.bsky.social ). Both are excellent, subscribe to @defector.com and Vince’s Substack: vincemancini.substack.com

That doesn't mean their copy has to be dry.
My favorite movie critic, Vince Mancini, will gleefully wedge in cheap jokes where he sees an opening. But in between all of those jabs, he's telling me shit I didn't necessarily know about the movie in question. Roger Ebert was a similarly valuable critic. I want a movie critic who knows movies, same as I want my NFL beat writers to know football. I want an expert.

I’ve been doing medical billing on the provider side for almost 14 years. The biggest change is how specialized my work has become. I started out doing all the billing for a single practice: scrubbing and submitting claims, appeals, patient collections. Now? I do JUST appeals.

I lucked into this synagogue but the rabbi is why I stayed. He’s pointedly mentioned “the people of Gaza and the West Bank who are also children of God” in his prayer for Israel. When he announced affinity groups he pitched the one about Israel as an ”opportunity to hear the full spectrum of (1/4)

Capitulating ground before negotiations even begin is neoliberal democratic strategy in a nutshell. There ARE important questions that need to be discussed with M4A (subsidizing physician and nurse education, what will be covered, etc) but that’s not a reason to quit trying
