Perhaps the most prized gift of all could be spotted peeking out from beneath the suit worn by Eric Trump at Lindsey Graham's funeral: red cuff links with the presidential seal in gold, embossed with Trump's signature on the back.
'Those are fucking status symbols," says the strategist. "Because they come straight from the president himself." The cuff links are handed out to a select few, because the red pair denotes true admiration. Sir Keir Starmer, then prime minister of the United Kingdom, was shafted with a comparatively pedestrian silver pair.

The Trinkets
Louis XIV, the imperial French leader who called himself "The Sun King," was known to hand out miniature portraits of himself, framed by diamonds, as marks of royal favor. Similarly, small tokens of Trump's fleeting affection are highly coveted.
Thankfully, the White House doles out all manner of trinkets to excited visitors. The Oval Office study has even been converted into a miniature gift shop, replete with MAGA hats promising
"Trump 2028" and boxes of M&M's bearing the presidential seal. (Trump refers to this as "the Monica Lewinsky room," given rumors it once hosted an infamous tryst.) The president himself hands out White House "challenge coins," which are small medallions made for each government agency, though Trump's are distinct in one way.
"They typically fit in the palm of your hand," explains a Republican strategist. "His is enormous. It's like a small frisbee."

Mm there's something about these artists...
Unlike the staid and sober Republicans of yore, the MAGA set likes to party, and a number of big-name artists —50 Cent, Timbaland, and Akon— have performed at Executive Branch. These bashes are attended by the most important members of the administration. "The parties are wild," says a club member who's never missed a show. "You have Nelly and Ja Rule and 50 Cent performing, and Dr. Oz and his wife ripping it up on the dance floor. Imagine being 50 Cent and looking out into the crowd and you see the attorney general, Todd Blanche, dancing?"

This is lovely, from @thecontinent.org's incoming EIC, Christine Mungai
In the Year of Our Lady

christine mungai, incoming editor-in-chief

LYDIA NAMUBIRU described my
replacing her as editor-in-chief as a
peaceful transition of power. That’s
accurate. But I couldn’t resist behaving
like every respectable African leader and
immediately issuing an executive order.
Everything published before this
issue is now officially BC: Before Chris.
We have entered a new era. I titled my
planning folder for this transition In
the Year of Our Lady, and while The
Continent’s publisher Sipho Kings
politely declined to recognise it as the
newspaper’s new calendar, I remain
hopeful that history will vindicate me.
Nine years ago, Sipho and I arrived in
Boston for our Nieman Fellowship. We
were two African journalists trying to
make sense of a profession that seemed
beset by bewildering forces – Brexit,
Trump, digital disruption, a world that
no longer made sense.
It got worse. Six years ago, a pandemic
hit, but also gave rise to The Continent:
a gloriously improbable idea in African
journalism. A weekly PDF newspaper,
sharp on wit, scepticism and intellectual
rigour, passed from phone to phone,
built not on algorithms but on
generosity. One share at a time.
Our friend Dustin Dwyer, who was
in our Nieman cohort, once said
journalism is a prayer. We offer stories
without any guarantee they will change
the world, or even make an “impact”. But
prayer (like journalism) isn’t a simple
technology for unlocking blessings.
The act itself matters. The hope and the
discipline matters.
Our readers rarely tell us we’ve
changed history – although we
sometimes do. More often, they tell us
that The Continent is delightful, a joy to
receive every weekend, a conversation
starter and a guide. That itself is an act
of resistance in a world that is working
overtime to fragment, brutalise, and
enshittify.
In the words of Ta-Nehisi Coates, this
work, to me, is the beautiful struggle.

Hum. 1980, eh?
Peter Ray knows that. Born in what is now Zimbabwe, the child of a mechanic and a radiology technician, Ray fled with his family to South Africa during the Zimbabwean War of Lib-eration. He remembers the journey there in 1980 in a convoy of armored cars. As the sun blazed down, a soldier taught
8-year-old Ray how to fire a machine gun. But his mother kept having to stop. She didn't feel well.

Alt, bc this is powerful
I am now described everywhere as an
"activist." Nothing angers me more. The word flattens me. Worse still, it implies a version of me who was not already shattered by a life of exile, refuge, and resistance. As if this began with something I did. I did not advocate for Palestine because I wanted to be active. I advocate because I have no choice. From the moment I was born Palestinian, my existence was political. What choice does a Palestinian refugee, deprived of basic rights, have but to resist the forces that seek to erase him?

From Dave Pell's newsletter
In the moments following the arrest of a man who opened fire in the Washington Hilton, where the White House Correspondents' Association Dinner was taking place, Donald Trump issued a statement that could double as a tagline for his entire presidency: "LET THE SHOW GO ON." Cooler heads prevailed and the remainder of the dinner was canceled. But the show? Oh, the show went on. The show always goes on. And it always has the same host. Thanktully, everyone inside the Hilton survived the evening. So did a key metaphor for our era: At an event that was attended by hundreds of members of the media, Trump was still the one breaking all the news; from what happened, to the arrest, to the first photo of the attacker, to updates on when the event (that he wasn't hosting) would be rescheduled.
Even in a situation when he's being grabbed by Secret Service personnel and rushed from a hotel, Trump still manages to drive the news cycle, and after nearly a term and a half of his presidency, the media hasn't figured out a way to change that dynamic. He's the news-maker, the news-deliverer, the news-distorter, and the news-critic in an all-hours, all-medium show that never ends.

Batting for the environment
Nigerian scientist Iroro Tanshi has won the 2026 Goldman Environmental Prize for her work protecting endangered bats in the Afi Mountain Wildlife Sanctuary, the BBC reports. In Nigeria, as in many other countries, bats are often feared and threatened.
Tanshi began a community effort to prevent wildfires that destroy bats' habitat after she discovered the short-tailed roundleaf bat. She works with local fire brigades to stop major fires and educate people on the roles bats play in our ecosystem, including dispersing seeds and pollinating plants.

"diplomacy with the Palestinians. "In theory, a weapon like Iron Dome could be used only defensively. But in practice it doesn't work that way," analyst Nathan Thrall told Jewish Currents. "Iron Dome facilitates greater Israeli offensive measures, because it lowers the perceived cost to Israel of escalating or extending or initiating attacks." In other words, while the Iron Dome may prevent the deaths of Israeli non-combatants, it has made it easier for Israel to engage in deadly operations that take Palestinian lives. Indeed, Menendez's formulation is backwards:
Rather than preserving space for diplomacy, Iron Dome enables Israel's commitment to
the status quo of permanent occupation. Its ultimate function is to entrench an already asymmetrical conflict into a state of ongoing bloodshed, dispossession, and devastation for the Palestinians of Gaza."

However, now that we have Complete and Total Regime Change, where different, smarter, and less radicalized minds prevail, maybe something revolutionarily wonderful can happen, WHO KNOWS? We will find out tonight, one of the most important moments in the long and complex history of the World. 47 years of extortion, corruption, and death, will finally end. Looking at Goldman Sachs Research gives a good timeline for thinking about the Strait of Hormuz

* March 4, Hormuz flows would recover in 5 days.
* March 9, they pushed that to 10 days
* March 11, they extended it again to 21 days of very low flows before a 30-day gradual recovery.
Goldman's thinking was similar to mine. On March 4th, I ASSUMED the US
Military had an active plan to open the Strait.
Between March 4th and March 11th, my thinking (like Goldman's) evolved when we both realized they either had the wrong plan or no plan and are currently struggling to figure out what to do.
