That was my read too, and I guess this just covers an edge case where someone submits two papers that get held by moderators in the last week of one month, but try to submit two more days later? Doesn't seem that important, maybe it's just easier to do calendar months rather than a rolling 30 days

An interesting result out today from LZ. Definitely not a standard wimp, but maybe an inelastic scattering or momentum dependent scattering? (1/n) www.sciencenews.org/article/dark...

Have scientists glimpsed the first dark matter particle?
Shadowy dark matter has eluded scientists for decades. The LZ experiment may have spotted one particle, called a WIMP, but more data is needed to check.

5-6 years is average. Some subfields might average longer, but I don’t think any average less than 5 years.

I don’t think you’re being hyperbolic about the consequences of this, but I think it’s also important that we don’t accept this now—there’s time to fight these rules before they go into effect, and stop a lot of the explicit harm they would cause

I was kind of baffled by some of the results too, but do they present any cross-tabs anywhere? I wonder how the 50% that were “science enthusiasts” or in “another field of science” voted on questions like this compared to the rest, for instance.

New: DOE is reorganizing the Office of Science, per email. Notably, it appears to be combining high energy physics and nuclear physics. Unclear if this keeps the funding pools separate. (I'll ask) Apologies for the low-res image; that's what they sent. On the right is the current org chart.

I'm constantly trying (/failing) to get this point across. If you're a trained expert in a field, then it may be worthwhile to question the scientific consensus of your peers. If you're not, the scientific consensus is absolutely the best you can do and it's arbitrary foolishness to disregard it.

I know this is an absurd proposition, but… is there a really good reason why CS shouldn’t just have its own preprint server? It’s a humongous portion of the arXiv usage now, brings a lot of the traffic that takes the site down, and seems like there should be means of independently supporting it…

Sam Homiller @shomiller.com · 02/11/2025
But only for reviews and “position papers”, and only in CS. I think for most of us it’s good news that arXiv is taking proactive steps to keep the site working.

Sad to see C.N. Yang passed away, a legendary physicist who despite his achievements was also one of the most underrated physicists of the 20th century and could have won multiple Nobel prizes not just one. He put Stony Brook University on the map and left an indelible impact on the YITP ⚛️🧪

Who gave the talk? There have been several claims of this nature in the past few years (and long before that, I’m sure), which all seem loosely related, but I don’t think much of the community is convinced by any of them

Awful news: CMB-S4 is cancelled. This experiment was massively exciting for the cosmology community. It would have told us about the state of the universe some 400,000 years after the big bang, at a level of precision we can now only dream about ⚛️🧪 www.science.org/content/arti...

Yeah haha, lots of these critics all have some things in common… though examining the sociological/incentive structures in the field is still worthwhile. I suppose definitions of “breakthroughs” in hep-th can differ, but any definition that excludes AdS/CFT seems… fraught 😅

Except in this case there’s only one experiment (CMD-3) that agrees with the g-2 measurement and the lattice HVP, while all the other e+e- measurements are very off — clearly there is some physics missing… Not sure if it could plausibly be BSM or not, but who knows?
