These hidden dates are known as chronograms, and one example appears in an engraving of Elizabeth (see overleaf), who died in 1603.
In the top left, next to Elizabeth's shoulder, is the inscription Mortua anno MIserICorDIae, meaning 'died in the year of mercy.

Why was 1603 a year of mercy? Perhaps the death of Elizabeth was a reminder to all Christian people that God had the power to take life as well as give it, and that in his infinite mercy he would (they hoped) take the queen to heaven. More likely, however, the engraver chose the word Misericordiae because it conveniently contained the letters for a perfect chronogram. Notice how the letters MIICDI have been deliberately capitalized by the engraver. Rearranged, they make MDCIII, 1603, the year of Elizabeth's death. If Elizabeth had died in any other year, the engraver would have needed to find another word or words that had the required number of Is or Vs.
It was around this time that coded messages also began to capture the publics imagination, and fed the notion that perhaps there were secrets to be found in even the most innocent of documents. Eventually the suspicion of hidden messages would spread to the work of Shakespeare himself.
