I really would not have cared so much about this if it wasnt for the exact opposite to get so popular with platformers. So much emphasis on resetting your momentum midair to do another move

Mario Eclipse felt great with this because instead of using the hover nozzle I pretty exclusively used the hover burst, because you can conserve your momentum but you need to use all the space available to you to build up some great speed beforehand, and you need to consider your angle/trajectory

Every month i have about a day where i remove all air control from Manor Opus because i keep thinking itll change things for the better. It doesnt really do much because you can still do air control stuff (roll to change direction)

Castlevania is what made me think of this. At first you think a platformer with no air control is a terrible idea but then you have a game like Bloodlines where you can attack in either direction midair so it starts to feel kind of awesome

Idk if its possible to make it feel Not Terrible but i daydream of a 3d platformer with no air control. Tons of control over your momentum but the decisionmaking lies entirely on the ground before a jump. Its kind of the Mario Eclipse experience.

Cap diving in odyssey felt so repetitive once i got good at it (no momentum involved, just a sequence of buttons to press) but at least even then it felt like stumbling on an exploit and not an intended move that the game tells you how to do, so it feels like youre forcing your own will on the game

AGREE!! A truly engaging platformer long-term needs to be skill based imo which means it does need to have some friction for early players… a lot of modern games try to streamline the movement so its easy from the start… but i think having to practice to get good is one of my fave things with games

The reason I’m tying it to position is just to avoid any mixups in updates/patches, it really is all tied to fear of changing instance order and affecting what identifier each instance ends up deciding for itself

Like I’m truly inexperienced with data structures, so idk if this is eventually going to fall to pieces as the list of collected candies gets bigger and bigger, but in that case I’ll probably just have lists for each scene (room) or something like that

Idk if theres much of an easier way to save on space for tons and tons of unique collectibles. Bare minimum they need position and scene, and it feels less convenient to place those values in individual lists per collectible, so they just save their data into strings.

That pic shows each collectible giving its own key + value (always 1) in a ds map. I managed to switch it over to just saving every flag to a single list instead. But it saves as a scary hexidecimal string for some reason. I’ve never dealt with save structures much
