It’s the most wonderful time of the year! (The day my labor Econ students do their collective bargaining game and demand things like fraternity leave [time off to hang out with your {gender neutral} bros])

A view of social reproduction, and more specifically domestic labor, that views "the home" and SR as outside of the realm of capitalist control actually limits the vision of the domestic realm as a sit of struggle by declaring it already free.

I think the best way to improve economics as a discipline/field is to replace multiple semesters of required microeconomics coursework with a mandatory six semesters working in service industry jobs.

The more "humane" a prison's mission statement is--highlighting care, health, wellness, etc.)--the more disturbing it is. And not because they're lying, but because this is where and how public care happens in the U.S.

If you ever want a window into how fundamentally fucked the United States is, I recommend reading dozens of state prison mission and vision statements. I do not recommend it if you do not want to be overcome with a feeling of deep hopelessness, however.

Tariffs only work if there's increased domestic production. Capacity is currently 73.7%, with 83,200 workers, in the Iron & Steel Mills NAICS sector. 20,900 jobs could be created if the mills went to full capacity and it was all steel (unlikely). It takes AT LEAST two years to build a new steel mill

Self proclaimed "progressives" invoking imagined science about trans women's advantage in sports is utterly rage inducing. The science does NOT show that trans women have an advantage over cis women, you absolute dopes. I am begging you to read an actual study.

The rapid dismantling of the (already inadequate AND carceral) public health apparatus in the United States is evidence that public health provision in the United States is barely better than private health services (and sometimes worse) and good health can't come from our current system

Teaching & service this semester are exhausting but I'm grateful for my students and colleagues for providing a modicum of stability and hope. Particularly my more conservative students, frankly--their unflappable interest in learning and solidarity with other working ppl suggets there is a way out

The Federal government revoking FEMA grant-disbursed funds from a city's commercial bank account, well past the usual five day reversal time limit, is deeply troubling.

Given the current number of job openings and the current unemployment level, laying off a significant portion of federal employees results in a total number of unemployed people that outpaces available jobs.
A graph from FRED that shows the relationship between unemployment level and number of employees and the job openings that reflect the content of the post.

VERY interesting thread on the fallout for farmers in the U.S. because of USAID freeze. Farmers/big ag are Trump's base here in the central valley and he's already jilted them once with his weird water release stunt.

I’m not an accelerationist but it’s scarier to think about the current policy moves resulting in successful (re)entrenchment of US capitalism (though almost certainly not working class quality of life) than for them to lead to the collapse of the US economy and global hegemony

This is bonkers. What are the US government's criteria for banning scholars from entering the US? Can US scholars safely travel abroad (for work or leisure) and be certain they can return? What about students? What about ANYONE?

Is Trump trying to speed up dedollarization in the world economy? Trade restrictions, halting foreign aid, and pulling back participation in various international organizations seem like solid steps in that direction.

82% of incarcerated people who were uninsured before incarceration saw a healthcare provider in prison since admission, 77% of those who had been incarcerated for a year or less. 46.4% of uninsured people in the "free" economy saw a healthcare provider in a one year time frame.

UNITE HERE Local 2 ratified a new contract with Marriott and there’s a tentative agreement with Hyatt! Economists organizing to leave to hotels probably wasn’t the decisive factor in pushing to settle, but truly believe we helped. Hilton still hasn’t budged so let’s keep it up.

Attending #ASSA2025? Want to know how to navigate your options with respect to hotels, food, & sessions given SF hotel workers' strike? @shirkandsteal.bsky.social @jennifercohen.bsky.social & I have you covered. Blog w/sign up for email updates. #EconSky aaronsojourner.org/hotel-worker...
Are you planning to attend the 2025 ASSA meetings in San Francisco? All ASSA activities have been planned for three ASSA headquarters hotels. Employees at two of these hotels – the Hilton San Francisco Union Square and the San Francisco Marriott Union Square – are on strike and asking people to not meet, eat, nor sleep in the hotels. At the third headquarters hotel – the Parc 55 by Hilton – employees voted to authorize their leaders to call a strike at any moment.

Yesterday, ASSA stated that allied associations can move planned sessions to alternative physical locations in San Francisco at their own expense and ASSA will facilitate updating of location information within their program system. This means there is a path to meaningful participation in the conference without crossing picket lines.

Did you book your housing through ASSA? If so, then you are booked at a hotel where workers are either currently on strike, where they authorized a strike, or where the union says there’s a real risk employees will be on strike in early January. All the ASSA’s preferred hotels for housing are in one of these three categories, as detailed below. The hotel workers union has asked people not to patronize these hotels.

What can a social scientist do as we face a conflict between our desires to:

participate in the ASSA annual meeting in San Francisco taking place at hotels—both for meeting space and lodging—where workers currently are on strike or at risk of striking,
respect the people employed by the hotels and their request of each of us to not meet, sleep, or eat in striking hotels as part of their wider local and national campaign to lift the industry’s job quality?
This blog walks through background and different strategies available to each of us.

If you are an URPE member or presenter, please don’t cancel your ASSA registration! It is looking EXTREMELY likely (almost certain) we’ll have off site, in person, on program sessions. Revoking your attendance will cause problems for our panels.
