After having devoured all of Helstaff's books, I was lucky enough to get an ARC of this one 🤩
And just so we're clear: the moment this bad boy releases, I'm buying a physical copy for my collection 😌

When I heard there would be a story that's basically a sequel to LUST & FOUND, I was sold, no questions asked.
Then more info came out. Pup play? Hrm, okay, not my kink, but it's a Helstaff book, so 🤷 Guess I'll be reading about pup play then 🤷
Finally the ARCs were sent out and I got to dig into this book. Def learned some new things (and ngl, I have some more understanding and respect for those engaging in pup play 💜)
So if you're like me and not sold on that specific kink, please, allow yourself to broaden your horizons as you will NOT regret it 😊

The characters were AMAZING 🔥 Each one of them is so well fleshed-out, and I loved every single one of them (excluding a certain marzipan (iykyk))
- Zophiel as an angel is just perfection. The depth of compassion
- Izra is the sweetest, no notes. Nobody gets to harm this sweet puppy 😤
- Varken was a character I initially was a little wary of but that didn't last long and he grew on me fast and hard (no pun intended). We all deserve such a loyal guard dog 💪
- And then, the whole reason this book even exists: Tristen... He fcked up BIG TIME back in LUST & FOUND (if you didn't read that yet, go check that out instead of reading this review! Go! Shoo!) Def a case of "FAFO" 🙈 the man has a lot to process though, a lot of baggage to work through... And I have to seriously compliment the author on how they handled this. There was no rushing at all. Tristen got all the space and time to figure things out. That was some seriously good character development. Especially considering where the man came from, his history, and his "views"; those take time to unpack. It was truly a joy to join this man on his path of... not "redemption" perse... More rediscovery and atonement.

Now if all the amazing characters weren't enough, we also get more worldbuilding! And oooh, I loved it so much 💜 We get to learn more about hell and different realms! 🤩🤩 (And dare I say, a glimpse of heaven 👀)
~And I asked for more of this when I read LUST & FOUND, so yay! 🥰🥰

I also laughed a LOT whilst reading this. Just a few quotes that out-of-context still work:

“He’s only just stopped praying, he’s not ready to be prey.”

“A warning would be nice the next time there are going to be surprise tentacles.”

So yeah, 10/10, loved this book, go grab a copy and start reading!

Short story: conch. Eldritch creature, suddenly mime, tentacles (no, not like that), two dozen fucks, body horror, inspired by actual dream, claustrophobia, "I told you so". Some things found on the beach are better left alone—especially when they seem like an offering on a strange altar.

My fav BB book so far 🙌
It starts off setting the scene for the entirety of the book: gothic.
Spooky, dark manor, grim countryside, secrets...
As if inheriting a chunk of land, house, and a large staff isn't enough to change one's life, this one comes with a lot of strangeness that quickly turns poor Mary's entire worldview upsidedown.
Was there a murder? An accident? What happened to the nearby town that makes all the people there so afraid? Why is the church in ruins? Why does Mary hear voices? Why do things sometimes turn yellow? And just why are these sexual feelings she hadn't had to deal with before suddenly waking up?
Mary has more questions than answers and for every answer she manages to pry free she gets three more questions in return.

The entire story is well-crafted—as it needs to be for a mystery to be satisfying—from setting to characters.
There is one character I instantly disliked, and disliked even more as the story progressed, and yet by the end Joachim managed to make me change my mind. That was some good writing 💜
I was definitely rooting for certain characters to end up together, and in that sense this book can be classified as a capital R Gothic Romance 😌

As for the spice... The cover might hint at what you can expect: eldritch goodness 🙌 though I bet not a single person can predict the "climax" scene of the book and what happens there 😏 It definitely left me flabbergasted and impressed.

If you enjoy gothic horror/romance with an eldritch mystery and plenty of spice—and are not afraid of a moresome—I highly recommend picking up this book and enjoying the ride.
Have some tea with honey while you read and set the light in your room to a dim, yellow glow.

Meya sat up. Flustered, she licked her lips. “You do realise just how evil you are, I hope.”
Nina’s hazel eyes gleamed. “Of course.” She bent forwards so their noses almost touched. “But you’re just so cute when you’re all hot and bothered.” She flicked her tongue against the tip of Meya’s nose and sprinted to the door, giggling.

5⭐ review:
This book takes many dark & chilling themes & a creepy setting & blends them together with the spice just perfectly.
I loved the romances between Meya & her 2 loves & how both unfold differently but just as naturally.
Meya's on the run & just trying to survive, the full weight of what she's endured hasn't yet hit her when even more trauma comes. This book's about vamps & steamy romance, yes. But it's also about Meya relearning how to be human & finding herself again after so much hardship. There's a scene at the start that sticks in my mind cos even tho the people who hurt her are dead, it's clear she still doesn't feel safe yet; her mind's still living through the trauma eventho her body's safe (or as safe as it can be in the castle of a vampire). This's true for most trauma survivors. It takes a long time for the mind to finally realize the danger's past & this was so perfectly portrayed in this book. Come for the spice & horror, stay for the healing & trauma recovery.

The thing about writing dreampunk is that things can become such glorious fun 😂 Zombie sharknado anyone? 🦈🌪️ #AmWriting 📚💙

A large waterspout erupted from below, and Tamesis guided it higher and higher. As it grew bigger, the amount of water below lessened. The zombies immediately conquered the new terrain, forming a dense circle around the hut. Their rotting fingers clawed at the edges and Devon used the back of her rifle to break them off.
“Hope you got a plan. They’re becoming a bit feisty.”
“No worries,” Tamesis replied. “I’m coming—step away from the edge.”
Devon did as she was told, and Tamesis took several steps back as well. Faer hands were still making the circular motions, though the movements were a lot bigger now. Suddenly, fae changed direction—and the waterspout followed. The dark water crashed into the horde of undead, sucking them right up.
Stumped, Devon watched as something large moved through the swirling water. “Oh no, you didn’t…”
“Oh yeah, I did.” Tamesis sniggered maniacally as the monstrous shark gobbled up its allies that had been sucked into the column of water.
Devon burst out in a laughing fit as her partner used the aquatic tornado—with multiple rows of teeth—to round up all of the zombies.
Once the last one disappeared into the putrid water, Tamesis moved it to the centre of what had been the pool. Fae brought faer hands together as if there was a ball in the middle, and the waterspout morphed into a floating, dark marble containing rotting remains, zombies and zombie-parts, and one undead shark. Fae took a deep breath and slowly exhaled into faer hands.
The ball of water glazed over and froze. The shark had attempted to jump out of it, but only the tip of its nose had managed to poke through before the ice had claimed it. With a loud crash, the crystalline orb plummeted back to Earth, shattering the bottom of the pool.

She stepped into the warmer bedroom & silently closed the bathroom door. Abruptly, all the strength & confidence she’d had a mere moment ago slipped away.
Oh gods, what do I do now? Do I crawl back into bed with him? She bit her lip. Well, what other choice do I have?
She contemplated getting her clothes & sneaking out to her own room but dreaded encountering a guard—let alone the lord’s reaction. Wary, she slipped back under the covers. She made sure to stay as close to the edge of the bed as possible without falling out. Still shivering, she relished the warmth that started to surround her.
“Cold?”
Meya stiffened at the sound of the lord’s voice & her heart skipped a beat. Oh, dear gods, he’s awake!
“I asked if you’re cold…”
Noticing the hint of impatience in his voice, Meya tried her best to get her vocal cords functioning again. “A-a bit, my lord.”
“Then why don’t you move away from the edge, or are you afraid I might bite?”

Her eyes widened when she saw dark blood flow from the cut and she opened her mouth to voice her horror, but the lord pressed his arm against it before a sound could pass her lips.
“Drink, before more gets onto the linens.” His stern gaze locked with her terrified one.
The warm, metallic fluid pooled into her mouth, yet her body refused to swallow. Frozen in fear, she just let the quantity of blood increase.
Lord Deminas noticed and tugged slightly at her hair. “If you want to get better, drink.”
Tears fell from her eyes as she closed them. She focused on swallowing, but it took several seconds before she finally managed to do so. The strange sensation of such a large volume of blood passing through her throat made her shiver. After the second gulp, she brought her hands up to grasp the lord’s arm. The initial fear was waning, and her tongue tentatively moved against the cut, causing a mischievous smile to appear on the lord’s face.
“Now that’s a good servant.”

This book is different than what I usually read in terms of genre, but is also exactly what I was looking for. I've been on a dark fantasy kick lately, and have also been trying to read steamier books to get me in the mood for a project I'm working on. Finding both of those things in a single title that was written so engagingly that it could hold my focus during this stupid fever was a dream come true - and this had the added bonus of fantastic representation.
Not only was the kink lifestyle represented well (and with post-story disclaimers), but there was also pan/bi rep, and more astonishingly, a healthy polyamorous depiction. This is my first time actually reading that in a fantasy book where it came across as something positive. I feel very seen.
Aside from just being a goldmine of things I've been looking for but having a tough time finding, there is a lot to appreciate about My Lord. There's a considerable amount of range from dark fantasy (that borders on horror in a few places) to a steamy romance. There's magic, mystery, revenge, and a healthy dose of anticipation.

“The perfect blend of spice and horror”
This book takes many dark and chilling themes and a creepy setting and blends them together with the spice just perfectly. I loved the romances between Meya and her two loves and how both unfolded differently but just as naturally. When we meet Meya, she is already on the run and just trying to survive, the full weight of what she has endured has not yet hit her when even more trauma comes her way. This book is about vampires and steamy romance, yes. But it's also about Meya re-learning how to be a human being and finding herself again after so much hardship has beaten her down. There is a scene at the start that sticks in my mind because even those the people who hurt Meya are dead, it's clear she still doesn't feel safe yet; her mind is still living through the trauma even though her body is safe (or as safe as it can be in the castle of a vampire....). This is true for most trauma survivors. It takes a long time for the mind to finally realize the danger is past and this was so perfectly portrayed in this book. Come for the spice and horror, stay for the healing and trauma recovery.

Her hands went down his body, one slipping beneath the rim of his trousers to grip his butt while the other felt the outline of his erection pressing against the fabric. Her fingers touching him caused him to growl softly and now it was her turn to smirk. She stroked his length, teasing him by leaving the barrier intact. Blue tugged at her hair, pulling her head aside, and grazed his pointy teeth along her neck before grunting, “Kitten wants more, huh?” His hand went down her side, leaving goosebumps in its wake. “Just don’t forget: I’m not human.”

The demon’s three-toed feet came into view, and he placed one foot on her head, pushing her face into a musty towel. “That was fun,” he said. “Let’s play again tomorrow.” He took a step back.
Aislinn tried to move, but her arms were now paralysed too. What did he do to me? Tears streamed down her face. Blue? Blue, where are you? Save me!
The demon crouched down in front of her. He grabbed her by the hair and lifted her head up so he could see her face. Their gazes met, his red eyes full of sinister joy, and he grinned, exposing multiple rows of sharp teeth.
