Grateful that @artiodaktyl.bsky.social was onboard with experimenting with the color palette and to push the looks of this even more! Even did a color blindness test to see if the colors would translate well.

Photo of the right side of a man’s face with a half mask that covers the lower half of his face with a black mask around his eyes. His right hand is to the side of his temple using an intercom to talk.

Photo of the right side of a Shifter’s face with a half mask that covers the lower half of his face with a black mask around his eyes. His right hand is to the side of his temple using an intercom to talk to Jabber on the other end.
Jabber: Still weird that Tambal are collab’ing with Chump of all folks.
Shifter: More like using. The only worth they see in him is his connections and how they can easily manipulate him in plain sight.
Jabber: I guess… Well, we’ll be able to expose his secret hit list and contacts for illegal trades and fraud business practices.
Shifter: How are the cams?

More snippets of the action! Dude never saw it coming.

Three panels showing Shifter fighting a drunk bigot. The first panel Shifter gives the guy a left jab to the gut while he grabs the bigot’s left arm to disarm him. The second panel shows him looking at the bigot’s friend, you see the friend’s worried expression reflected in Shifter’s mask. The third panel shows Shifter swooping him to punch the friend with his right after and showing heavy impact.

From sketch to inking, @artiodaktyl.bsky.social is killing it with really carrying out the grit I wanted when portraying Shifter!

Inking of three comic panels. From left to right, panel one depicts a security guard turning around to see Shifter, the vigilante, charging at them. Second panel shows Shifter seconds from punching them, a glint in their knuckleduster. Final panel shows the flash light flying as it fades to black.

When coming up with a signature for the Tambal, I gave @artiodaktyl.bsky.social two sketches of butterfly with eyes for wings. I felt it was a fitting symbol for the Tambal as they strive to gracefully to see and known all without being detected.

The location setting for Shifter’s story will mostly take place within the city of Chicago (a place I grew up around). A lot of the places are reference to actually location folks might be familiar with. Can you guess what place I’m referencing here?

Rough sketch of a city skyline with a large building standing above the rest. The sign reads CHUMP. There is a smaller panel to the right that is a close up of a penthouse style room.

The reason behind the back design for his suit stems from the term “Egg”, which refers to a person who is trans but hasn't yet realized or accepted their identity. I felt wings often symbolized birth and growth for trans folks, adding to the phoenix theme.

Concept back drawing of wings stretching from the back shoulders down the biceps. Color palette reference with golden yellow, orange, teal, blue, and red, as well as a more saturated version of the same palette.

Shifter is an assassin that uses a lot of tech and gadgets he’s created. His mask can read infrared signatures, as well as give him night vision when needed. You can see the finished pages debut at SDCC with @diwatakomiks.bsky.social as a part of New Icons!

Panel sketches of a man with a half mask that has lenses that are colored orange. The next panel is a door but half of it shows an infrared version of that scene where a man is behind the door.

This isn’t a joke! This is another more final version of Shifter’s costume that @artiodaktyl.bsky.social masterfully put together when working with @diwatakomiks.bsky.social

Concept art of Shifter in his hero costume. Colors are a gradation from orange to blue with hints of red. He has a half mask that covers his mouth and nose, as well as knuckle dusters. Costume incorporates phoenix flames/feathers elements plus patterns inspired by barong embroidery and piña fibers.

Early stages of Shifter’s design by @artiodaktyl.bsky.social When asked what Shifter looks like, I wanted someone that looked like an average Filipino man. Someone you could easily bump into on the streets and not know they were a vigilante that kicked butt. This became an alt fit though

Concept art of Shifter. Showcasing him with a short shaggy hair cut and him with a buzz cut. He’s wearing a jacket, a white shirt, pants, and boots. He’s wearing knuckledusters and has a bag for an Arnis, a traditional Filipino fighting stick.
