One thing I love about Zcash dev culture is the norm of people surfacing more clarity about the trade-off frontiers for big decisions as different people bring up or advocate their preferences or concerns. We all learn the trade-off space, we learn what different preferences ppl have. What we could improve on, IMO, is ensuring we document / internalize which desirable trade-off points we've chosen to forego and why, and there's a pragmatic norm for rationalizations including things like "we all agreed the benefits of shipping in a timely manner outweighed the downside risks raised here."

I love how AI has rekindled discussion and interest in my bubble of "consciousness" and "the hard problem". I am largely persuaded by @danieldennett (RIP)'s Consciousness Explained, now known as Illusionism: consciousness is a real, emergent outcome of physical processes, while "qualia" or "the ineffable aspect of experiencing stuff" is fully explainable as functional physical processes. Perhaps those who balk might be interested in distinguishing "fully explainable" (given infinite resources) and "fully explained" (impossible in practice) with me? Now I'm especially intrigued by the connection to "qualia", "ineffable / lived experience", tacit knowledge, scientific modeling theory, and my moral stances around sentience. Sounds like from ChatGPT I should read Dennett's "Welcome to Strong Illusionism", Adam Jenkins's “What Mary Didn’t Know About Tacit Knowledge” (2003), and Michael Polanyi's "The Structure of Consciousness". Anybody wanna start a book club?

Economic incentives (thus politics (thus social cognition (thus consciousness))).

How do you strike the balance between improving your lifestyle, processes, tools, workshop, "shipping results", and a meaningful / eudaemonic / The Good Life™️ trajectory? I like to fold the eudamonia stuff into "shipping results", perhaps a geeky/aspie approach. As a FLOSS grey beard, I've always been a yak-shaver: every tech project involves a lot of time thinking about / iterating on my underlying toolchains/infra. Coarsely, it is: self-sovereign hardware -> human-computer executive layer -> project tooling -> "tangible results" goal achievement. (Modern products basically lack the exec layer altogether. Soon to change w/ AI. :robot-winking-emoji: ) AI agents haven't changed the shape of my tech yak-stack at all! My leaning edge in AI is figuring out how to redistribute my effort on yak-stack frontier progress. Tangents: my "hardware" layer needs better bio integration, and all layers need better social integration. Any SF workout / diet buddies interested? Ping me!

Claude helpfully pointed out that one way to replace the UI while keeping the subscription is to run `claude` in a "brain in a vat" configuration where my preferred UI peeks and pokes the terminal process internally. 😂 Has anyone done this?

Suckered by Anthropic's biz model: hook me w/ a subscription that's "cheaper" for agent capabilities but only if I use their UI, which is just enough to get me entangled while shitty enough that I want to write my own, pushing me towards the pricier metered API. Checkmate. ♚

AI is helping to humble me on executive function at delegating, not because of human-vs-AI cognitive difference, but simply turn-around time: it's exposing my review bottleneck much faster.

My AI request-to-verify ratio is a lopsided bottleneck. Next experiment: #DearAgent: please review all past contexts, find the agent responses that I'm likely to have never reviewed, summarize+prioritize those results based on my priorities, clarifying my priorities as we go.

If you were orchestrating ai agents precisely in a hierarchy rolling up to a single "Executive Assistant to The Human" while pushing the pareto frontier of cost vs effectiveness, do you make the EA the costly/smart model, or can cheaper/dumber delegate to smart effectively?

UX is impossible: I believe humans are just highly cognitively varied, and different UX for the same task works better/worse across the populations. I also wonder if my fraction here is greater or less than others. Anyway: user-tailored UX is gonna be killer! 🔚

(c2, c3) are the "easy miniboss" fight against entropy gremlines. (c1) feels more frustrating (and inspiring!) to me, maybe because I keep thinking "someone chose to make it this confusing way". Not hating on UX peeps! ⤵️

shielded-nate.bsky.social @shielded-nate.bsky.social · 23/07/2026
So here's a great question: how much time per per day should I reallocate to _completely replacing that tool/UX_ with vibecoding? I'm currently unsure, because categories (c2, c3) are larger and also (c3) has compounding payoffs (my configs get more streamlined by the day). ⤵️
110
shielded-nate.bsky.social @shielded-nate.bsky.social · 23/07/2026
My least favorite category: 12.5% (c1) "intended UX": There's no bug, nothing is misconfigured, my subscription is current, etc... it's just that UX just sucks. If this correlates to time spent, that's about 1 out of 8 work/chore hours wasted learning some dumb apps UX. ⤵️

I can finally put to words why "tech" is bittersweet for me from ChatGPT analysis of "general tech" convos. This is all "conversational", not agentic/coding/building flow. 15% learning, 32.5% building, 2.5% doing (instructional) - 50% YAY! Then 50% bullshit snarls & snags. 🧵

One way I find microblogging to be socially connecting is via sharing playful speculations or questions. Now I notice an AI-age tension: I can often ask AI for further info on my speculations or questions, then I may not post. Lost connection opportunities!

A clear AI win is to describe what I want, then ask "What are the best technologies available to meet my desires?" I am (we are?) in a phase that uses AI to glue together those pieces. What proportion of future tech will be commoditized (many user) vs customized per-user?

A counterfeit recovery would demonstrate ZEC antifragility. How many people realize the supply scarcity is not vulnerable to circuit failures? Think of it this way: any crypto that lives long enough will suffer exploits. The ❔ is not if, but will that kill it or heal it? ⤵️

IMO, that will be the true test of people's beliefs. Yes, it would be a disaster. It would be real world users harmed, ZEC stolen. -and yet, my bet is that would make even ZEC stronger than the no-counterfeit case! Why? ⤵️

Example in blockchains: Calling something "the merkletree" annoys me. It's a set-like thing... but what's the *purpose*? It's like naming your variable "integer". It sorta kinda works if there's one central integer everyone knows about... but what if they don't yet?

Tangent: one reason I dislike Hungarian notation is related to this habit where programmers just start referring to a generic type or structure as the name of something, rather naming by purpose.

When programming, I eschew Hungarian notation when it's not necessary, and I define "not necessary" as a boolean quality of "the type system and tooling". But when it _is_ necessary for readability, I then wish English and Noun-Then-Adjectives ordering. ;-)
