We sent a birthday card first class to a friend last week who had a birthday with a 0 at the end. She has lots of friends who will send her cards. She’s had one card in a week. It wasn’t ours.

As to this an attack on a US city, possibly a false flag, possibly from Russia or Iran, and he declares a National Emergency which will last the rest if his pitiful life.

He’s talking about a Pearl Harbour moment to rescue his presidency. An attack arranged for his benefit. It’s not hard to understand. It’s all about him.

Yes, we’ll punish the young who are paying the taxes to fund pensions for the old. It didn’t work for the last government, or the one before, or any of them, but it just might work for us!

The absolute collapse of the Conservatives is the consequence of the changes made by Thatcher in the 1980s and the follow through by Blair. There isn't a moderate sensible voice left in the Tory Party. All that's left are head-bangers and dupes.

There is a moment at the very very end of Abdul El-Sayed's podcast with Ezra Klein (book recommendation section) where he talks about the idea of "speaking truth to pain" and this will be staying with me for an extremely long time. www.nytimes.com/2026/09/25/o...
But there’s also something about truth to pain. We talk a lot about truth to power, but I think it’s actually a lot harder to speak truth to pain. I say that as someone who went to medical school, realizing that in a lot of our politics right now, we’ve got to get a lot better at speaking truth to pain if we’re going to get through some of these challenges that we have.

What does “truth to pain” mean?

It’s one thing to look power in the eye and say: You’re wrong about this. But there’s a way in which pain is very difficult to reason with. Because when somebody is in their pain, they’re in their trauma. They see that pain, and they may not see what’s causing it.

I remember just very explicitly being in a trauma ward with a gunshot wound patient and watching this big guy with his hand on his gunshot wound. All the folks are trying to pull his hand off his pain, that point of his gunshot wound, this clear vulnerability.

And this emergency room doctor had the presence of mind to be like: Everyone, stop. And she looks him in the eyes, and she’s like: I get that really hurts, and I’m so sorry that you’re here. You don’t want to be here. We don’t want you to be here. But if you don’t let us fix this, you could die. So I’m going to take your hand, and I’m going to move it off, OK? Because I need to get there so that you can live.

She was speaking truth to pain. He understands he’s at the hospital, he needs care, but he also doesn’t want anybody to touch the wound. Which is a natural thing. And I think it is a really great metaphor for how we think about a lot of these challenges we talked about today.

If the BBC becomes yet another streaming service then we have completely missed the point. Yes, the leadership and bias needs to be addressed, and trust restored. That’s prerequisite. But as an instrument of soft power the BBC is an absolute bargain and enables the UK to punch far above its weight.

I think that to some extent the example in the White House has set the bar for a certain type of male. I won’t call them men. Men don’t do that. Maybe because of him they thought they could get away with it. We all need to know that they won’t.

I think it’s fair that if you’re going to go for an agenda this radical then you want the electorate to buy into the programme. Doing it without a vote is nonsensical. He’s set out his stall, though.

Many of those voting for Brexit had no clue how the EU worked and just lapped up Farage’s accusations that it was anti-democratic without challenge, e.g. “MEPs can’t introduce legislation”. No, member countries do that. MEPs are there to scrutinise and represent their constituencies.

We had that. There was a dedicated printer port in the back of the PC, and you had a special parallel cable. You plugged it in and it worked. Sharing it was tricky, though.
