Had a lovely author visit yesterday at Willow’s School in Ms. Edgle’s grade 4/5 class. Sometimes grandparenting is about picking up after school or cheering at baseball games and track meets. So proud of my girl, who was inducted into the Oak Bay Sports Hall of Fame last night…not just for her on-track accomplishments, provincially, nationally & internationally, but as a wife, mum of 4, paediatric nurse,middle school school track, v-ball, & b-ball coach. Yeah, Cloe!

Better Next Year: An Anthology of Christmas Epiphanies edited by JJ Lee was this month’s book club read.Some of the stories were extremely moving. Some were too sad for me. A few of the authors & the editor attended our Xmas book club dinner. They were brilliant.

I love writing books about where we live for kids. Some people call the west coast the wet coast. Mostly, we Welcome Rain! (illustrated by Christine Wei). We love that rain makes the forest lush & is fun to play in.It’s a perfect west coast Xmas gift for your littles.

Current read, The Retirement by Sue Hincenbergs. Not your usual retirement advice…this one involves longtime girlfriends, plenty of wine and a hired hitman to take care of pesky husbands who watch calories for their wives, eat the leftovers you have been saving and lose your life savings. Hilarious!

Current read. The Memoirs of Stockholm Sven by Nathaniel Miller. Actually a novel, but the characters are so well portrayed that it could easily be mistaken for a memoir. A little on the bleak side for my taste. Still, Miller has a real way with words as well as character, &I will follow his work.

Current read, American Mermaid by Julia Langbein…what would happen if a broke teacher’s first novel took off and became wildly popular. And what if Hollywood came knocking!? Only halfway through it,but am finding it a smart, funny, and quite thought-provoking read so far.

I was 18 when I first read this book. I wished I would have known about my body sooner, but ‘vagina’ was a word I hadn’t heard of & I had no idea what a menstrual cycle was until I began mine. So thankful for Norma Swenson who gave my generation the gift of Our Bodies, Ourselves. Books open doors!
