Womp womp: Here's how much money the world’s 500 wealthiest people lost in the “DeepSeekFreak” yesterday
That’s how much money the world’s 500 wealthiest people lost in the “DeepSeekFreak” yesterday, according to calculations from Bloomberg based on its Billionaire Index.

The big tech selloff, brought on by the weekend buzz around DeepSeek-R1, a powerful Chinese artificial intelligence model that was reportedly trained at a fraction of the cost of its rivals, naturally hit CEOs of AI-adjacent companies more than anyone else.

Jensen Huang, CEO of chip giant Nvidia, which shed $589 billion in the biggest one day monetary loss for a single stock in market history, saw $20.1 billion of his fortune wiped yesterday, while Oracle Corp. co-founder and potential new TikTok owner, Larry Ellison, saw his estimated wealth fall $22.6 billion — roughly 12% of his overall net worth.

Don’t rush to restring your tiny violins just yet, however: Nvidia is up more than 3% in pre-market trading, and Oracle is clawing back a few percent too.

Here's what all your doomscrolling and bed-rotting added up to: 2.4 TRILLION hours were spent on social media in 2024
The main thing humans use their phones for is social media, and its not even close.

App analytics firm Sensor Tower released is “State of Mobile 2025” report, which says that for all of 2024, consumers spent nearly 2.4 trillion hours on social media apps. Of the social media apps we wasted so much time on, not surprisingly, TikTok was the leader.

Social messaging apps (led by Meta’s WhatsApp) were the number two category, with only 607 billion hours.

"It's easy for insurance companies to try and say it's not really as bad as you’re saying it is."
In extreme cases, IBS could cost professionals their careers. Trevor, who has IBS and asked us not to use his real name, worked as a business strategist in creative industries for 14 years before losing his ability to find work. After he got laid off in 2022, Trevor was actively job searching, networking, and landing interviews for months when he was hit with unexpected abdominal pain. A year later, the pain became so excruciating that his job search came to a halt. He couldn’t apply to jobs and struggled to make it through interviews and networking calls without needing to lie down. Even if he did get an offer, he said, he knew it would be impossible to perform the job’s responsibilities.

“I’m not going to take a job that I’m not able to deliver,” Trevor said. “That would be unfair for them and that would be unfair to me.”

IBS affects as many as 45 million people in the US — up to 15% of the American population — and cases continue to rise. The prevalence is strong enough that there's a measurable economic impact:
The uptick in gastrointestinal issues has economic consequences. A survey of 1,776 employees at a large US bank found that workers with IBS were 15% less productive compared to the performance of workers without IBS. Employees suffered a 21% decrease in overall work productivity, equivalent to less than four days of work out of a five-day workweek. Treating IBS is also expensive. Patients with IBS related to constipation pay an average of $11,182 a year in healthcare costs, which include doctors’ visits, outpatient services, hospitalizations, prescriptions, and ER visits.

What does a company town look like in 2024? It's got a Montessori school (that doesn't have a big enough well for its initial planned enrollment), a pottery studio (under construction), and a bodega that sells chili crisp and has an Instagram-friendly backdrop (but no insulation in the walls)

"There are a number of [company towns] where they did try to provide pretty good services so that they could get better workers," says Price Fishback, an economic historian at the University of Arizona. "It doesn’t have to be bad. Just, if things go bad, they can go really bad."

Locals have repeatedly raised concerns about the companies’ effect on the environment, including when Boring asked to pump over 140,000 gallons a day of treated wastewater into the Colorado River.
A decade ago, when Ellen Tanner’s daughter was little, the two would walk down to the Colorado River near their home in Bastrop to picnic with friends and wade into the cool water. A lot has changed since then. There’s more traffic than before. A movie studio is setting up shop. Some concrete and gravel companies have started operations.

Oh, and the world’s richest man moved in. With bulldozers.

Perhaps the biggest recent audience change is Magic's growth within the corporate world. Increasingly, white-collar knowledge workers are ditching the traditional battles of wits like poker and chess and building Magic decks.
Take Richard Dahl, 55, who works in management in the healthcare sector. He had no interest in strategy or fantasy games until eight years ago when he walked into the break room at work and noticed a group of employees playing a card game he didn’t recognize. Most happened to report up through him, so he naturally took an interest in what they found so interesting.

“I’d sit there and watch, just trying to figure out what it was they were doing,” he said, trying to follow their complex and intricate moves. Day after day, they kept playing, and he kept watching and chatting. He was drawn in by the game’s ability to build social bonds at work — like when a new hire who’d been struggling to connect with people got advised to start playing “Magic,” and through the playgroup quickly forged new relationships.

Finally, for Dahl’s birthday, the playgroup pooled together and bought him a preconstructed deck for his birthday and told him he had no excuse left not to join the community.

“Much to my wife’s dismay, and a lot of money later, I’m still very much into it,” he said.

In 2022, “Magic” earned nearly $1.1 billion, becoming toy giant Hasbro's first billion-dollar brand—a benchmark it's hit every year since, as the game continues to find new audiences.
