Fix merged into GNOME's GLib that benefits FreeBSD users! Large file copies could sit at 0 bytes with no progress updates, and cancellation could be unresponsive. Our fix addresses both issues. #FreeBSD #GNOME #OpenSource

7 years ago today I started a YouTube channel to record videos for my own reference, such as stripping down laptops. Today that goal has moved to teaching others what I can about networking, firewalls, storage, and operating system. #YouTube #TechTutorials youtube.com/@sheridans

We needed a quick way to test laptop keyboards without an operating system installed. Existing tools were buried inside large diagnostic images, so we created Kbdcheck: a free 47 MB bootable USB image based on Arch Linux: keyboard, mouse and touchpad tester. Use FREE, no registration. kbdcheck.com

Part of refurbishing a laptop properly is checking the things that are easy to miss. Keyboard, touchpad, buttons and other inputs all get tested before it leaves the bench. Just one part of the refurbishment process. #SheridanComputers #RefurbishedLaptops #LaptopRepair #Manchester #Stockport

We independently verified the behaviour described in the latest ScreenConnect advisory. A malicious or modified client can abuse file transfer during a support session. Apply the published mitigation now, meep an eye out for an official fix. #ScreenConnect #MSP #CyberSecurity #ITSupport

HDMI or DisplayPort? For a PC monitor, I’d normally use DisplayPort if it’s available. TV or console? HDMI. Basic office screen? Either is fine. And if your new 4K monitor feels oddly sluggish, check the refresh rate an older port or cable may be limiting it to 30Hz.

This is where the magic happens. 🔧💻 My son is spending part of his six-week holidays in our downstairs workshop, where we handle all laptop and PC repairs in-house. Not a bad place to learn how things really work.

A few years ago, cybersecurity felt like a big-business problem. Not anymore. Most attacks we respond to now start with something small - a remote employee’s unpatched laptop, or an old remote-access tool left open. #SmallBusiness #ITSupport #Manchester

Do you think Microsoft will eventually charge a subscription for Windows? With Windows 11 becoming increasingly locked down, the company’s clear shift towards recurring revenue through Microsoft 365, Copilot, and other cloud-based services, it’s fair to ask. #Microsoft #Windows

If I can pull off an #OpenSource #RMM, and an open source remote access tool, this will change the way vendors (ex car-sales) farm #MSPs. The remote access thing forced my hand. But, the RMM can launch it on demand, and terminate it when done - no 24/7 always on. Nothing commercial or free does it
