90% of the people in this quiz look like therapists, with the remaining 10% split between student ID, uber driver and guy who's gonna try to sell me crypto. anyway, apparently I like androgynous people who look a bit irish, which is going to shock precisely nobody esp if they've met my husband lol.

Was looking into some pride month related stuff and stumbled across history's funniest discourse post, from 2017. I cannot stop laughing about this.
Tumblr anon ask post reading:
Q: wait, forgive me for asking but why is achillian problematic?

A: This question has been filling up my ask box so i’ll just leave this here!

tl;dr: “achillean” is a term created only to counter the wlw term “sapphic,” and is based off of a misogynistic, p*dophilic, and slave-owning Greek figure, (all of which is Not Good).

“Achillean” is a recently coined term used to regard mlm, and has been followed by lots of discourse. Created by tumblr user @asculan in June of 2016, many gay men/masc-aligned ppl and other lgbt ppl began to use the term on tumblr as an alternative to using the acronym “mlm.” “Achillean” itself is based off of the Greek figure, Achilles, who has been known to have had same gender relationships, thus becoming an inspiration for the creation of the term; but, despite his relationships, he had an extremely problematic past, including owning sex slaves, practicing p*dophilia, and being extremely misogynistic in general. Also, the term was only made to counter “sapphic,” a word for wlw based off of the Greek Sappho, in an almost “one-up” way label-wise. Overall it was created in bad taste, and instead of taking labels directly from wlw, it would be beneficial to both gay men and women to use “mlm” and its alternatives! If there’s anything i haven’t covered send me a(n) message/ask!

Briar and I are losing our entire minds over this "tip". I'm glad your wife explained to you how doors work?? Even though you seem to regard 'using the door' as a weird little quirk of hers???

Was reading the afterword to Roadside Picnic, which details their struggles getting it published, and discovered that the official censors of the USSR would have fit right in on Goodreads.
text reading: “It didn’t even cross our minds that the issue had nothing to do with ideology. They, those quintessential “bloody fools,” actually did think this way: that language must be as colorless, smooth, and glossy as possible and certainly shouldn’t be at all coarse; that science fiction necessarily has to be fantastic and on no account should have anything to do with crude, observable, and brutal reality; that the reader must in general be protected from reality—let him live by daydreams, reveries, and beautiful incorporeal ideas. The heroes of a novel shouldn’t “walk,” they should “advance”; not talk but “utter”; on no account “yell” but only “exclaim.” This was a certain peculiar aesthetic, a reasonably self-contained notion of literature in general and of science fiction in particular—a peculiar worldview, if you like. One that’s rather widespread, by the way, and relatively harmless, but only under the condition that the holder of this worldview isn’t given the chance to influence the literary process.”

saw this image on one of @eruditorumpress.com's chapters and immediately knew that this was the distillation of my husband @flameswallower.bsky.social's aesthetic even before he confirmed that yes, he read it as a teenager, and yes, it had a deep and lasting impact on his psyche and aesthetic senses

it's reviews like these that remind me why I love being Into Perfumes
review reads: It smells like a person with bad breath and a cavity rotting in the molar.
Also smells like tripe and rotting meat.
The most authentic perfumer and the best ambergris perfum i ever smelt.
It Is not Easy, neither good or versatile.
You only Need a pair of balls to put It in any context your Life can offer.
I would only put It in intimate and selected friend group Hangouts.
It can cause nausea and vomito gag.
But the sensation of the true smell of ambergris that isnt even close to the ambegris of the mai stream perfumery Is a unique occasion
You dont Need tò throw away a kidney tò smell
Silence tue Sea by strange love.
THIS One Is 200 for 50 ml and for what It contains i ensure you its worth every single euros.
I dont even think It can be used as a base of layering beacuse its so difficult.
Fuck all this perfumer with firmenich and givaudan premade Accord.
This Is true perfumery.
Making tincture by the local reasources and making perfume by lived experience, not the One the perfumer never lived or ultra hyped through bullshit Accord and influencers.
Make your self a favore and buy It, Just tò know how much mediocre Is the rest of It.

Longevity Is unknown, got to study It for more time
Projection Is weak because of the absence of fixatives.
Sillage Is 3 meter
The smell Is unique, of you like good smell its not good. If you like bad smell its good.
I like bad smell and this One Is the best.
Over all perfect

I simply cannot stop laughing at this Vinted listing that someone clearly used ChatGPT to compose.
Listing reads:
"rand: turn. home + style
Product Type: Wallpaper or decorative covering.
Features: The label indicates "CE" marking, suggesting it conforms to European safety standards, and "Made in E" which likely refers to a European country of origin.
Availability: This type of product is typically found in home decor stores or online retailers specializing in wallpaper and interior design materials.
Application: It's used for interior decoration, specifically for covering walls to enhance the aesthetic of a room."
The brand is in fact "furn"; however, it's possible the lowercase f resembles a t to ChatGPT's image processor, especially when photographed on the curved surface of a wallpaper roll.

One of my edgiest opinions is that I think food served in a way that makes it seem grosser than it is, is great actually. I'm also a huge fan of those ceramic chef's mouths that a terrible Michelin-starred restaurant in Lecce used to serve citrus foam with no utensils (you had to lick it out).
citrus foam drips from a ceramic cast of the chef's mouth.

Can I interest you in the cover for this Kindle edition of 'The Good Soldier', which tragically is no longer for sale on Amazon? Might be the only time I've bought an ebook specifically for the cover; I laugh every time I see it.
A cover for 'The Good Soldier' by Ford Madox Ford. Inexplicably, it features a middle aged man in hi-vis and a plastic safety helmet, carrying a large cardboard box, a perky look on his face.

You know that bullshit Jonathan Chait thing about how leftwing people don't have a sanctity/degradation axis? Wrong. My sanctity/degradation axis revolts at burying someone in a D-Tier Tesco bag for life design.

Engels Foodcake @shellcollector.bsky.social · 08/09/2025
This is apparently one of their most popular designs, and I'm going to need a new set of laws that prohibit burying someone in this.

Dressing my toddler up like a guy whose wife decorated their entire home in shades of white and grey and beige around him while he sat watching an endless loop of football, drinking a mediocre beer, eating pringles. Her nails are beige and four inches long and he lowkey thinks they grow that way.
020
Engels Foodcake @shellcollector.bsky.social · 25/08/2025
This toddler's only emotionally significant relationships are with 3-4 guys from uni, to whom he is homosocially and - let's face it - more than a little homoerotically bonded. he'll spend the next decade in increasing rage as they all peel away to form hetero couples. he gets too drunk at weddings.
110
Engels Foodcake @shellcollector.bsky.social · 25/08/2025
This toddler bought a disposable barbecue from Tesco and insists on calling it a 'barbie' which he puts on an Australian accent for. It's the only time this year he's cooked something that didn't come out of a jar.

Engels Foodcake @shellcollector.bsky.social · 25/08/2025
I like it when my toddler looks like he wears a perfume that he calls 'cologne' and is 90% Ambroxan.

Engels Foodcake @shellcollector.bsky.social · 25/08/2025
Why do so many people want to dress their toddlers like some guy who drives an Audi and uses the word 'mate' only when he is addressing a tradesman. Why is that a thing.

Look I think everyone can do whatever they need to, but imo if you respond to someone's long, carefully argued thread about why the article they shared doesn't hold water by blocking that person? You are a cowardly little bitch. This is the article btw: aeon.co/essays/your-...
010
Engels Foodcake @shellcollector.bsky.social · 05/08/2025
Again, to be clear I essentially agree with this! Though I think plopping social context at the end like an afterthought is bananas. But the article doesn't argue well for its conclusions, perhaps, if I'm allowed a little cattiness, unsurprisingly for a philosophy article written by a psychologist.
110
Engels Foodcake @shellcollector.bsky.social · 05/08/2025
It's easy to be generous and say this was written in 2016, when neural networks were not at the forefront of most people's minds, and so you could get away with acting like if computers didn't act like 70s era ones they at least acted like 90s era ones. But this guy was working in cognitive science.
110
Engels Foodcake @shellcollector.bsky.social · 05/08/2025
The thing that's driving me insane is that I can easily imagine - and perhaps it would be more likely, in today's climate - an article arguing the exact opposite, that humans 'literally process information' but computers do not because they are unable to comprehend what they process as information
100
Engels Foodcake @shellcollector.bsky.social · 05/08/2025
The metaphor doesn't go in that direction! The phrase 'from memory' predates computers by hundreds of years. This is something I pulled pretty much at random from a text from 1710.
110
Engels Foodcake @shellcollector.bsky.social · 05/08/2025
Author uses this comparison between a dollar bill drawn from memory and a dollar bill copied from an actual bill to argue that brains don't store 'symbolic representations' of objects. But this is what you'd expect to see if brains used lossy compression algorithms that prioritised meaningful detail

Pro tip for anyone that needs it: The eyedropper and zapper tools on uBlock Origin are real game-changers because you can simply disappear entire html elements and make it so that you simply don't see parts of a website you don't like. If you don't want to know what's trending you don't have to.

7. It's easy to eat a lot of ultraprocessed foods at once than unprocessed foods, but somehow the best example of an unprocessed food the author could come up with was blueberries, which nobody has ever munched on unstoppably.

5. "Brain octane oil" is somehow an indicator that a food is *less* processed, even though I'm pretty sure that however you get the octane oil out of brains it's a pretty process-intensive activity.

Sometimes I just replay this one medscape article in my head because it's such a perfect encapsulation of almost every kind of weird, confused thinking about ultraprocessed food: 1. "Ultraprocessed foods aren't necessarily worse for you, but that nuance is not worth paying attention to at all"

Jesse WTF meme where Jesse is explaining a metaphorical interpretation of S3E6 of the White Lotus to an incredulous Walter. "What I'm saying is, our participation in fundamentally unjust social relations IS the brother fucking. We all have to choose what we do with the knowledge once our eyes are opened. Do we blend a protein shake really really loudly to try to drown out the awareness, or do we mindfully accept the reality that we fucked our brother and try to find some kind of spiritual wholeness?"

I bought some homemade lacto fermented watermelon from Moldova in a market on the Kingsland road, and I'm going to eat it because I like to live a life of thrills and excitement.
slightly beaten up plastic tub with a handwritten label saying 'lacto fermented Watermelon/ Ingredients: Watermelon, Water, Salt/ Homemade in Moldova". The watermelon is a mysterious red and green shape in the murky brine.

apparently these guys are 'an invasive species' and 'eating Florida’s native plants and destabilizing seawalls' but here's my hot take: they're so beautiful they should be allowed to do whatever they like. the mangione principle if you will.
photo of a green iguana. her scales are coloured in a beautiful gradient from orange to green to almost blue. she has pink spikes along her back like a punk girlie. her dewlap falls in elegant folds like a silk dress. she has a smug expression as she looks out upon the florida landscape, wondering what she should destroy today.
