A huge thanks to @chipman-lab.bsky.social , my co-author Eviatar, @snsf.ch for funding my PhD, and everyone at Hebrew U who supported this work. Science is a team effort! 🌌✨ #Ecology #LightPollution #Isopods (3/3)

It’s been wild seeing this picked up by Ynet, Phys.org, and Yahoo. But the best part is seeing the public care about light pollution and its impact on even the smallest, often-overlooked creatures! 🌍🗞️ (2/3)

I am absolutely thrilled—my first PhD article is published and making headlines internationally! 🥳🔬 We found that everyday streetlights trigger Armadillo isopods into bizarre, continuous "death spirals." Read the paper in @ecol-evol.bsky.social here: onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/... 🧵👇 (1/3)

Yesterday we had a lab outing to say goodbye to Asya Novikova. Asya has been in the lab (on and off) for over 15 years: as an intern, as a student and as an animal technician. We are sad to see her go, but it is time for her to move on.

On both sides of the path are tall purple inflorescences of Scilla Hyacinthoides. In the foreground are some pink Linum pubescens. Aside from these there are numerous yellow and white flowers: garlic, mustard and more.Asya standing on a slope with the lab mascot - Plushy Onopeltus - strapped to her backpack.Asya sitting on a stone wall under a large oak tree and playing the recorder.

This phenomenon has not been observed in marine isopods or any other isopod. This is the first documentation of this phenomenon in isopods (and in non-insect crustaceans if I'm not mistaken).

This is just the beginning. I have several more projects in the works on crustacean genomics and evolution. Stay tuned for more isopod mysteries and evolutionary deep-dives coming later this year! 🌊🧬 #AcademicSky #BioSky #Crustacea #Evolution

This work wouldn't be possible without citizen science! 🤳 Community-sourced data allowed us to track rare species across areas traditional sampling might miss. It’s a powerful reminder of how public engagement can drive high-level taxonomy and conservation biology. 🤝📊

Disturbance isn't just habitat loss. It triggers unexpected behavioral shifts in species we barely understand. 🕵️‍♂️ In this study, we show how rare crustaceans respond to human-altered environments in non-obvious ways. We impact the world even when we aren't looking! 🌿

Why do humans cause strange biological shifts without even trying? 🧐 I’m proud to share my first PhD paper! We explore the intersection of citizen science, taxonomy & anthropogenic disturbance in rare species. 🦀🧬 Just the start of a big year for crustacean research!

A Novel Light‐Induced Collective Circular Movement in Armadillo sordidus Isopods
We describe an interesting aggregative behavior in terrestrial isopods. We conclude that this behavior is in response to intense artificial lighting.

🎥🐾 "They are walking in a circle." This reminds me of an ant death mill, but with isopods! 🐛 Biologists and arthropod enthusiasts: Have you seen similar behavior in isopods or crustaceans? Could it be attraction to pheromones, food, or something else? 🤔 #Biology #Arthropods #Crustaceans #Isopods
