If the query letter pitch and synopsis are well written, the agent/editor will figure out any subgenres. If you get it wrong, you risk having them pass. You want your query and opening to compel them to read the manuscript. Of course, it needs to be stellar. 010 0

A antihero protagonist makes the wrong choices for the right reasons, deepening the reader engagement. A villain, which could also be the protagonist, raises the stakes.
