And the River Sheaf, the river Sheffield is named after, has been buried in a culvert since 1917. It's coming back out, with a fish pass so salmon can get upstream.

Then came Castle Market, built right on top of the remains in the 1960s and shut in 2013. The fish and meat market, the pet stalls, a brew at the Riviera. Who else remembers it?

Long before that, Mary, Queen of Scots spent 14 years as a prisoner here and at Manor Lodge, from 1570 to 1584. The castle was pulled down in 1648 after the Civil War siege.

That events lawn is a nod to the bowling green that sat on the castle site in the 1700s. It's right there on Ralph Gosling's 1736 plan of Sheffield, beside the Sheaf.

Why the delay? The dig kept finding castle: gatehouse towers, the drawbridge pier, a six-metre moat, a 12.5m medieval well still holding water, Civil War stakes and two steel furnaces built into the ruins. They are Grade II listed, so the park has been redesigned around them.

The plan: a 500-capacity events lawn, castle remains you can walk past, play areas and the River Sheaf opened up alongside. It was due this year. Now it's summer 2028.
