Vassy Kapelos: What if [a windfall profits tax on big oil] deflates them? NDP leader Avi Lewis: Tell the family where 1 in 4 Canadians is skipping a meal .. to feed their kids, that an industry making $90B in profits this year can’t afford to pay a little bit more. I’m sorry I just don’t accept it.

Avi Lewis: "We have shoved Canada Post so far into the market mindset that every few months we have a national conversation about why isn't Canada Post making money. Does the ambulance service make money? Do the police services make money? We're talking about a fundamental public service."

I wrote this song on Saturday, recorded it yesterday and released it to you today in response to the state terror being visited on the city of Minneapolis. It’s dedicated to the people of Minneapolis, our innocent immigrant neighbors and in memory of Alex Pretti and Renee Good. Stay free

Canada’s response has shown why we need the NDP: Poilievre applauds Trump. Carney's government cannot muster a single world of criticism. Whatever you think about Maduro, Canada cannot be an accessory to this blatant violation of international law.

Sad news. My thoughts are with her friends and family. She was kind, sharp & had a fabulous sense of humour. I'm thankful for her many contributions to our community.

That motion - for the police services board to be asked to rethink their request for operating money - carries 6-5. Voting in favour of this motion were @joylachica.bsky.social, @alexbierk.bsky.social, @mattcrowley.bsky.social , Coun. Don Vassiliadis, Coun. Dave Haacke and Coun. Keith Riel.

Yet the library fights for scraps while Mayor Jeff Leal hands the police carte blanche.

A 2023 report found that for every $1 invested in Canada’s urban libraries, $6 is generated in community economic impact (a 600%+ return). These are direct economic benefits to the community in addition to the social value the library provides, especially our downtown branch.

The fact that the library has to make cuts at all is unfortunate. The underfunding of our library system by City Council is shortsighted when study after study shows the (quantifiable) return on investment to be significantly high, let alone the intangible benefits of investing in public libraries.

Sheetal Rawal @sheetalrawal.bsky.social · 06/11/2025

Hopefully just an anomaly. At the public meeting in June when people raised concerns about the outrageous amount the 'strong mayor' had directed go to the police, they were essentially told nothing could be done about it. Are there other things in this budget you would flag for folks to tune into?

Edmonton Public Schools has decided that Margaret Atwood is too dangerous for youth to read. As is Brave New World. 1984 is banned by Grade 9s and younger. This is the MAGA machine of Danielle Smith in action. Perhaps a public book burning will reassure the base. www.cbc.ca/news/canada/...
