Worst mayor in Ontario to use powers granted by the second worst Premier in Canada so said worst mayor in Ontario can frustrate federal government's urban intensification policies and municipal democracy at the same time. @shawnmicallef.bsky.social @jm-mcgrath.bsky.social

Your condescension aside, I am v aware groups are against but as you @'d me I asked you to explain why, beyond the existence of their opposition & talking points. HSR exists in many countries & farming is unharmed. You bring up climate change (?) yet HSR diverts traffic from highways/planes

Great column. It really is the most transparent level of gov't (police notwithstanding). Things are tight. I often get comments like "city hall is corrupt" - well, show me where? It has the most openness, the most public eyes on it. Other levels, far less transparency (looking at you, Ontario)

"More England than England" or some such was the tag line for one Toronto postwar suburb. (So many other parallels where the mother country evolves but the colonies keep the flame alive - Maltese upper classes having something of an Etonian/Queen's accent that doesn't really exist in the UK now)

So many people sent me this trailer because of my Brutalism evangelism but it never really seemed like a film about concrete from what I could gather, rather a bit & that's confirmed in Corey's thread here. Bits are fine (so is poking fun at brutalism) but isn't a film about concrete exactly.

Well that's it. A good warm humid ride last night. Perfect Toronto even if i chose some hostile routes (Goreway, man, it lives up to its name). I do these threads mostly for my own, uh, reification. Making a post, even a stupid one, sets it in my mind a bit more than just taking the picture. /fin

I think this used to be a nurse’s residence or rehab facility - now a private boarding school - by the former Humber River Regional Hospital (early 1949 mod award winner, evolved/expanded into other healthcare uses). This one is 1970s brutal + classic Canadian splits.

Some parts of the ravine system are total Edward Gorey fantasias. Up here along Weston Rd good example. The mud stain from the August storm flood still visible.

Toronto is full of exorcist stairs. Here where I left the surface streets & went off grid (Weston Road & Starview Lane). 1998 Specialized Stumpjumper makes cameo.

A few more from last evening. There’s a spookiness at dusk along old “Indian Line” as the tall towers along the 427 light the way. Scrubby land by the damn/reservoir. I’d have gone further north but lack of sidewalks, night + 80km+ everyone makes it rather hostile.

Interesting. What I loved about the Phoenix is it was ~tucked in~. Walking by you'd never think "concert hall with long history in both Toronto's music and ethnic club scene".

This is getting super interesting. While I'm not certain yet what exactly is going on, at the moment, it seems like Canada was used to establish the bona fides of an AI "journalist" who subsequently went on to engage in foreign interference in Morocco..... www.turkiyetoday.com/world/exclus...

Yeah. In our first Kensington Market iteration of [murmur] I went there and recorded stories from a guy who grew up in the market. IIRC his parents owned a hardware store, recalled the boys who went on found Cadillac Fairview running around. Must have been towards 80, 23, years ago.

Best 105 memory -- watching old Kids in the Hall "Buddy" clips and Scott Thompson makes reference to going back to "105 Isabella" after the bars. Surely watched that in original run & made no note of it, but hair on arms when up when watching at 105.

Some people can't even walk down Isabella or Jarvis now because of that stucco. Sensitive, you might say, but it's important to have standards. It's called civilization.
