This may come as a surprise, but sharks and rays are sort-of 'cousins'. They belong to the same group of fish called elasmobranchs. Instead of bones, both have skeletons made of cartilage, giving them flexibility and agility. Read more: www.facebook.com/share/p/1LM8...

Gillnets contribute to the problem of pollution and are often swept away, lost or discarded in our oceans and waterways. They can act as ghost nets that continue to entrap and kill other animals like water monitors, birds, turtles and dolphins. Read more: www.facebook.com/share/p/17qF...

Sharks and rays often use estuaries as nurseries for their young, making them vulnerable to getting caught up and killed in illegal gillnets. This leads to a significant number of juveniles being caught before they reach adulthood. Read more: www.facebook.com/share/p/18vv...

In South Africa, gillnetting is largely illegal. This is because it is an indiscriminate fishing method that often captures and kills marine life unintentionally, including threatened species. Only TWO fisheries are legally allowed to use gillnets. Read more: www.facebook.com/share/p/1C8y...
