At each co-operative, five plots were chosen. Three plots were sprayed with new biopesticides, one plot with an existing pesticide and one with water to act as control. Tarpaulins were placed around the base of cocoa trees to catch pests killed and establish which biopesticide is most effective.

30% to 40% of cocoa is lost annually due to pests. Innovation is needed to address this challenge. Working with Université Félix Houphouët-Boigny, University of Ghana and RICE, this project will develop a new eco-friendly, affordable biopesticide to reduce cocoa loss and boost organic production.
