A lively study of an unruly elephant by a c1720 - 30 CE Kota Rajasthan by an artist who has skillfully captured the energy, movement & the playful power of a young elephant. From the Welch colln sold by Sotheby's. This distinctive style is typical of 17-18th century artists of the Kota atelier.

A small, gem-like & exquisite c1617-18 CE portrait of the infant Mughal prince Shah Shuja signed by one of the greatest Mughal artists Abu'l Hasan from Welch collection sold by Sotheby's for £585,000. Single-figure portraits of infant or very young princes are a relative rarity in Mughal paintings.

c1710 CE Rajput painting from Mewar Rajasthan of the Mughal ruler Shah Alam Bahadur, also known as Bahadur Shah 1, who ruled from Delhi during 1707-12 with four of his sons sold by Sotheby's in June 2021 for £60,000. A soldier to the core, he spent only 4 days in palaces, rest in tents, fighting!

A Woman Lying on the Ground Venerating. From an album made for Colonel Antoine Polier in c1770 CE. Polier began his career in India as a Surveyor in the East India Company in 1758 before becoming Chief Engineer of Bengal Army at Calcutta & finally, Chief Architect for the Awadh Kingdom at Lucknow.

c1825 CE Company Painting of a 'Foxtail Millet' from the Welch collection auctioned by Sotheby's. Production of natural history paintings for British East India Company patrons began in the 1770s & were commissioned by Dr James Kerr, a Scottish surgeon at Bengal who arrived in India in 1772.

On the Birth Anniversary (Gurupurab), Guru Nanak, founder of the Sikh religion, this c1770 CE painting from Lucknow or Faizabad now at Asian Art Museum of San Francisco. Born at Nankana Sahib in 1469 CE, His words of 974 poetic hymns (Shabad) form the holy text book of Sikhs, the Guru Granth Sahib.

Turkey is forgiven on Thanksgiving, the Harvest festival. This c1612 CE painting by Mansur, made for Mughal ruler Jahangir & now at Victoria & Albert Museum is a record of arrival of exotic birds at Cambay Port It was procured by Jahangir's friend Muqarrab Khan in 1612 from a shipment from America.

One of the earliest works by the artist Nainsukh of Guler HimachalPradesh this c1760 CE Pahari painting of "DiwaliCelebrations at a Court" is now at British Museum. Diwali comes from Sanskrit 'Dipa' (Lamp) & 'Avali' (Rows). Its celebration marks the beginning of the Indian New Year, Samvat 2080.

Licence-for one Male Servant! After the last post on Prostitutes, another document from the same collection which documents the inhuman part of mankind's history. This 'Licence' to keep a Male Servant for the calendar year was issued on 27th January, 1885 CE for 15 Shillings (1 £ = 20 Shillings)

Registration of a Prostitute! A fascinating document from the collection of Sunil Baboo of Bangalore, India. This document in French was issued in 1841 CE to one Ms. Sophia, aged about 25 years, from the village of Liege, France. A sad chapter in human history but then, that is how it is.
