In a similar vein, here's an extensive list of scientific discoveries that were later disproven by religion: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.

What day is it? Is it Steak & Blowjob Day today, or is it Pi Day? Well, since I'm a scientist who believes any day could be Steak & Blowjob Day, or at the very least Blowjob Day, let's talk about Pi. Who first discovered it, anyway? 1/8

Raise your hands if you can't stomach the sound of trump's voice and aren't watching the SOTU speech to save both your ears and your mental health! 👋

So trump's criticizing the person who signed the US trade agreements with Canada and Mexico, saying "I blame our leadership for allowing it to happen," when he's the one who *checks notes* created, negotiated and signed the US-Mexico-and-Canada Trade Agreement in 2020. Am I getting this right?

I'm reminded of this same time in 2017 when I chose my own sanity over being well informed for about a year. About to reach that same level again. 😫

My backyard in Anchorage, AK in January. I'm about ready to pull out the lawnmower, because there's no need for a snowshovel anymore.

The seven republican deadly sins are weird and confusing. Empathy, poor, universal healthcare... Pride is still there, only it's a different kind of pride. What are the rest?

Ugh. I don't care what trump says, no one in Alaska calls it Mt. McKinley. We never have. It's always been Denali, the Great One. It will always be Denali. Not Mt. Denali, just Denali. It was Denali when I was 5, was Denali when I was 50, and it'll still be Denali tomorrow.

Random science fact: not to get technical, but a pound of feathers weighs more than a pound of gold. How's this possible? Gold is measured in Troy ounces whereas feathers are measured in the Avoirdupois system. They aren't equal. One Troy ounce is 1.09714 Avoirdupois ounces. A Troy pound is 12 oz.

Random science fact: Certain fungi that grows on the fur of sloths has anti-cancer and anti- bacterial properties, potentially opening up new avenues for drug development. Kinda jealous that we can't grow cool fungi like that.

Random science fact: 8% of our DNA comes from remnants of ancient viruses. An additional 40% is made up of repetitive strings of DNA that's also thought to have viral origins. Almost half our DNA didn't come from us! That's a lot of outsourcing.

Random science fact: the largest plant in the world is a sprawling sea grass (Posidonia australis) found in Shark Bay off the coast of Australia. It stretches for more than 112 square miles (180 km) and is about 4500 years old. Beat that!

Random science fact: lightning strikes the Earth about 100 times every second. When you do the math, this calculates into about 8 million lightning strikes per day. Imagine if we could harness that electricity! One lightning bolt has enough power for a small town for an entire day.

Random science fact: cats don't have a sweet tooth because they can't taste sweet. But do you know what they can taste that we can't? ATP, or adenosine triphosphate, which is the chemical that supplies the energy in every living cell. I wonder what that tastes like. 🤔

Random science fact: honey badgers are resistant to snake venom. In fact, not only are they resistant, but snakes, including venomous ones, make up to 25% of their diet. That's pretty bad ass.

Random science fact: when threatened, sea cucumbers eviscerate themselves and shoot their internal organs out of either their mouth or their cloaca in self- defense to scare away predators, an act called autotomy. Don't worry! They grow back!

Random science fact: birds have hollow bones, which allows them to fly. However, contrary to popular belief, this doesn't make them lighter, because they need to be dense to stop from breaking. The hollow bones expedite oxygen delivery to their muscles during flight.

Random science fact: there are at least 3 galaxies visible with the naked eye: the Andromeda Galaxy, the Large Magellanic Cloud, and the Small Magellanic Cloud. The former two are only visible from the southern hemisphere, and actually orbit our Galaxy. Yes, the Milky Way has satellites.

Soooo I went out of state for a few days for work last week. Got back home late Friday night. Woke up Saturday morning to a cat between my legs. Under the blankets. The little micro menace had crawled underneath the blankets and in between my legs while I slept. I think my boy missed me.

Random science fact: what do elephant shrews, bats, and the spiny mouse have in common? They're the only mammals outside of primates and old and new world monkeys that menstruate. Which begs the question whether bats concern themselves with period pants. 🤔

Random science fact: technically octopuses don't have tentacles. I know, I know, you're thinking "but what about those 8 arms?" They're arms, not tentacles. The definition of tentacles is limbs with suckers at the end. Octopus arms have suckers up and down the whole length, ergo arms. Tada!

Random science fact: the chainsaw was invented in the late 1700s for childbirth. It helped with widening the pubic cartilage, and helped remove diseased bone during childbirth. It wasn't used for wood until the 20th century. Boy am I glad I didn't birth a child back then!!

Random science fact: do you have an irrational fear of long words? Does the term antidisestablishmentarianism cause you anxiety and fear? If so, then you suffer from a phobia of long words, otherwise known as Hippopotomonstrosesquippedaliophobia. Say that one ten times fast!

Random science fact: how many miles is a light year in a leap year? It's the same as every other year. A light year is based on the Julian calendar, which is 365.25 days. It's not based on the Gregorian calendar, which is 365 days except during a leap year. Pretty smart.

Random science fact: think same-sex attraction is solely a human phenomenon? Think again. As many as 1,500 species have been observed engaging in same-sex activity, from insects to mammals, all genders and all ages, both social and solitary species. This is perfectly normal.

Random science fact: All the world’s bacteria and archaea, if you put them end-to-end, would stretch for 10 billion light years. That's crazy! Combined, all of the 0.001mm-long microbes on earth could wrap around the galaxy 20,000 times. That's a lot of microbes.

Random science fact: fossilized poo is called coprolite. The largest coprolite ever found to date is over 30 cm long, and over 2 liters in volume (that's 1 foot long and just over 2 quarts). That's a big fossilized shit! It's believed to be a T-rex turd. Wonder what it ate. 🤔

Random science fact: the earth's rotation is slowing down and days are getting longer. The length of a day increases by about 1.8 seconds every century. In about 200 million years, we'll have a 25 hour day. I keep saying I want a 40 hour day. I just gotta wait a little longer...

Random science fact: we have stripes, but we can't see them (our pet cat can). They're called Blaschko's lines. They form V patterns on your back and S patterns on your stomach. They're invisible to the human eye unless you use a strong UV light. So go try it, check out your stripes!
