The Charter Review Committee (CRC) application is still open! A Charter Review Committee (CRC) is convened every six years. If the CRC believes changes are needed, they propose Charter amendments that the Board will submit to the voters to decide via ballot. Applications are due by 11:59pm on October 8th, 2026.

August is Black Business Month. The observance was established in 2004 by historian John William Templeton and engineering entrepreneur Frederick E. Jordan to empower minority business owners and address disparities in financial backing. August was chosen as it marks the birth month of abolitionist Frederick Douglass, a pioneer of Black entrepreneurship.

Grand Gesture Books is Portland's well-loved, Queer Black Woman owned romance-only bookstore. Owner Katherine Morgan is a romance enthusiast, and has hopes that the bookstore will also serve as a community space. Grand Gesture Books is also one of just a handful of Black-owned romance bookstores in the nation.

They have improved the quality of life in the African American and overall community through advocacy, empowerment, social education, and economic programs that inspire and impact youth, families,
and institutions."

What is Black August? Created in 1979, Black August was created to commemorate George Jackson’s fight for Black liberation. Black August is now a month-long awareness campaign and celebration dedicated to Black freedom fighters, revolutionaries, radicals and political prisoners, both living and deceased.
The annual commemorations have been embraced by activists in the global Black Lives Matter movement, many of whom draw inspiration from freedom fighters like Jackson and his contemporaries. This is a way to honor the lives and deaths of Black political prisoners killed by the state, bring awareness to prison conditions, and to honor the radical tradition of Black resistance against anti-Black state violence systemic oppression.

How to Show Support.
There are many ways you can show your support for Black August. Multnomah County is home to many Black organizations that do work towards the liberation of Black people. There are organizations focused on food security, housing, childcare, civic engagement, and more. Find one that speaks to you and join, donate, or volunteer.
Other ways to show your support is to educate yourself on the history, leaders and figures within the movement and share their stories. Every Friday in August we will share the stories of Black Revolutionists that shaped the community and our shared history.

I may sound like a broken record but we can not keep making the same mistake over and over again. Process matters. We must engage those most impacted by decisions in the decision making process. Our workers feedback matters. #Multco #workers #District2 #MultnomahCounty.

Friday I asked to pause the Hybrid Work Initiative. At today’s board meeting, I again voiced my concerns about this Initiative. I have been clear with the COO that this work should not move forward.

Process Matters. This initiative was built without the input of front line workers and I stand firm that it must be paused. I will be bringing this issue before the board for more discussion in the weeks to come.
