A tiny swatch of today's work: hidden wallpaper (buried under many other layers of wallpaper, and mostly only intact in corners where two layers were overlapping, thus protecting the bottom layer). Directly adhered onto the 1880s (ish) plaster... no idea what era its from, but she's cute!

I *LOVE* Brent Hull, and have watched a lot of his videos, including his ones on insulation! I even wrote to him to see if he does paid consultations. Unfortuately he usually works in warm climates, so I can't apply the same techniques here in freezing Canada... but I will have a re-watch!

...a combo of warm air coming up from the damp-in-summer basement (direct tunnel to these stud bays thanks to balloon framing) and the holes in the siding layers, and a leaky window framing structure above funneling water in from the top. Was it just one or all 3? Who knows 🤷‍♀️

So we have cladding, cedar siding, then cardboard & asphalt siding, then cardboard and aluminum mixed with vinyl siding. 3 layers of siding, and yet there are still air gaps EVERYWHERE. Plus they drilled holes for blown-in which they never patched. Our house is flat out GUSTY. But we think this was

yupppp. vapor barrier and insulation but no air barrier and several holes to the outside = lots and lots of mold and/or mushrooms, but also strangely lots of dry rot too? Wood crumbles into dust and snaps at the touch 🙃 It's been a day...

Not warm, but can be humid (Nova Scotia; we're -7 right atm). Previous owners installed insul & vapor barrier but no house wrap, and then proceeded to bore several holes in the sheathing which they left uncovered 🫠 We have to re-side the whole house, and will probably do house wrap at that point

before we got our roof rack, we borrowed a van from our realtor, thinking we could fit some plywood sheets in it... we could not. Cue standing in the parking lot of our lumber yard scratching our heads when a nice gentleman with a pick-up truck pulled up and asked if he could help... lifesaver! 🥳
