ssnover @shanesnover.com · 11/10/2026How did you keep such a big model stable while being able to rotate the feet so they can face backwards like in the bottom right shot? 100
ssnover @shanesnover.com · 11/10/2026Interesting feet on that Riptide, looks a bit different from mine. Didn't notice that my sprue had two shields in it either. 110
ssnover @shanesnover.com · 16/09/2026Getting an email from a stranger who says something nice about a blog post I wrote is just about the biggest dopamine burst I could have on the Internet. I learned so much from technical blogs when I was early in my career (still do) and it makes me so happy to feel I have paid it forward a little. 010
ssnover @shanesnover.com · 11/09/2026I think the part of that article that mentioned that Rs had not really convinced the public that clean energy was to blame for energy costs was pretty revealing. 001
ssnover @shanesnover.com · 02/09/2026Super jealous of your beautiful collection there! I buy from Piper on Etsy which means I'm paying on par with GW prices, but it's definitely worth it for the superb models. It has limited me from expanding my forces so rapidly though! 110
ssnover @shanesnover.com · 26/08/2026Amusingly I initially thought the crossword was a floor in the right side piece. 110
ssnover @shanesnover.com · 12/08/2026Ratchet and Clank has so many aliens that would look great on a table. 130
ssnover @shanesnover.com · 09/08/2026In the UK strawberries are grown hydroponically in glasshouses which is an even higher land investment. US will have to move that way too once some pesticides are outlawed. 010
ssnover @shanesnover.com · 20/07/2026I'm not sure how close the thresholding works, but I expect for a call as close as the Croatia game it would be up to the refs, not the VAR system. And it'd be declared immediately. Not sure if that justifies the system being used at all, but I think most frustration comes from slowing the game. 000
ssnover @shanesnover.com · 20/07/2026Hawkeye has a relatively slow system which is why the referee call is so delayed. The innovation primarily comes in trying to make it a live decision. Genius's system is about 5 seconds behind live and is only camera based, so it's just for offsides calls. 100
ssnover @shanesnover.com · 20/07/2026So I used to work on the VAR system currently in use by the Premier League, which is different from the system currently used at the World Cup. The way this is talked about internally is that the main problem with VAR is when something is overturned way after the event like in the Egypt game. 100

ssnover @shanesnover.com · 31/05/2026Large C++ projects should be coming up with a way to unit and integration test the codebase comprehensively so that a rewrite can use those tests to address those risks. 000
ssnover @shanesnover.com · 28/05/2026Right, I have no visual problems but often I will look at the alt text because it's not actually clear what part of the image the post is supposed to be highlighting. I can see what's there, it's just not obvious what is relevant. 000
ssnover @shanesnover.com · 27/05/2026Interesting, I've been to LA and San Diego for work a number of times and haven't ever seen one despite the fact that I know people cross the border there as part of their daily commute. I just expected some of the bluffing about security concerns was actually preventing them crossing the border. 100
ssnover @shanesnover.com · 27/05/2026Right, they've been available in Mexico and seem popular in CDMX so I figured there must be a reason they've not been seen driving in the US already. 250
ssnover @shanesnover.com · 26/05/2026Without policies that move to increase density this will increase urban sprawl and create a larger wildland-urban interface from which wildfires can happen more frequently. 000
ssnover @shanesnover.com · 26/05/2026Right I guess my point was that smart watches from Apple, Google, etc seem explicitly marketed to tech people rather than general purpose and that could lead to a mismatch in expectations. It's not the only product segment that's relatively narrow like that. A lot of "smart" lights are similar. 000
ssnover @shanesnover.com · 25/05/2026I think fitness watches are much better about this because they're not necessarily marketed to tech lovers. My Garmin is rock solid and my only gripe is that they don't let me get my data outside of their app. (but Fitbit does) 200
ssnover @shanesnover.com · 24/05/2026Per this very article, DHS was created in late 2022. By this point, approval of GW Bush had eroded back close to similar levels of approval as prior to 9/11. The spike can only be seen as reaction to fear. But it is not the same as approval of DHS, and having the two mentioned together implies that. 100
ssnover @shanesnover.com · 23/05/2026The important part: "... it lost $80.3 million on device sales, up from $43.9 million in device-based losses the prior year. Yet it made $1.9 billion profit from its platform business, ..." 100
ssnover @shanesnover.com · 23/05/202630 seconds of quick research: www.malwarebytes.com/blog/news/20...malwarebytes.comRoku accused of selling children’s data to advertisers and brokersFlorida claims Roku ignored clear signs its users were minors, collecting and selling viewing habits, voice recordings and precise locations. 100
ssnover @shanesnover.com · 23/05/2026I used to work with a guy who went on to work for Roku. They definitely are selling a considerable amount of information. I used to run mine through a PiHole and you could see its performance degrade. If you try to find a TV without all these smart features you have to spend significantly more. 100
ssnover @shanesnover.com · 23/05/2026The cost of TVs is heavily subsidized. It's very expensive to buy a TV that's not also building an advertising profile of you. 120
ssnover @shanesnover.com · 19/05/2026I've been using Kagi for a while which actually accesses data from Google's crawler. It's not free, but it is a much better experience than Google has been for a while. 000
ssnover @shanesnover.com · 16/05/2026I'm perfectly happy to add clippy to my CI pipeline rather than pay a person with a checklist to find the same issues naturally, automation to that end feels okay. I might say the same for all monitoring/verification tasks since that's a category humans are intrinsically bad at. 010
ssnover @shanesnover.com · 16/05/2026Totally fair. I have generally begun to think about LLM usage for linting and verification as different than LLM usage for producing code. They feel distinct enough to be evaluated separately when it comes to labor issues for example. 240
ssnover @shanesnover.com · 16/05/2026This is something I've thought about a lot but have no concrete guideline for myself. I've worked in robotics on applications which replaced manual labor. The justification was always that the labor was unpleasant (recycling) or there wasn't enough (ag), but that's always a trade off of paying more. 000
ssnover @shanesnover.com · 16/05/2026Do you consider them inherently secondary or is it simply a judgment you've made on the current trade off as it exists today? 230
ssnover @shanesnover.com · 15/05/2026I'm really looking forward to official HK Assassin Droid models in Legion! 000
ssnover @shanesnover.com · 12/05/2026This is not just gas prices due to Hormuz but also increased natural gas exports from the US which drives up domestic prices. Naturally that is also good for LNG producers, but not US customers who currently heat their homes and power the grid with it. 010
ssnover @shanesnover.com · 28/04/2026Some citation needed on who announced those. Many prospective data center projects are non-commitally engaging multiple utilities at once to begin the process to get in the interconnection queue and will pull out of all but one. There is no reliable estimate actually available. 110

ssnover @shanesnover.com · 24/04/2026I actually prefer this model since I do not own a car. The extent that this comes in the form of income tax is the extent to which I'm subsidizing land use patterns I think are destructive and bad for the planet and society. This fee scales with vehicle value which lets it scale to income. 010
ssnover @shanesnover.com · 24/04/2026While that's all fine in theory, what data is available related to enforcement rates? I've seen temporary tags that have expired by multiple years. You would only do this if you weren't concerned with getting caught. 000
ssnover @shanesnover.com · 24/04/2026They're supposed to deincentivize antisocial behavior. You have to register in order to pay registration fees which are used to fund maintenance and construction of the roads you drive on. 120
ssnover @shanesnover.com · 23/04/2026If they want to make it easily enforceable they should set up a bounty for reporting violations. I'd make a lot of money in LoHi and downtown. 020
