This thing has made me go do a lot of reading tonight, and the Wikipedia page about the last public execution in the United States is well-written. It was Rainey Bethea, a Black man hanged in front of a crowd of 20,000 in 1936, a spectacle which embarrassed Kentucky enough that they ended hangings.
Hanna placed the noose around Bethea's neck, adjusted it, and then signaled to Hash to pull the trigger. Instead, Hash, who was drunk, did nothing. Hanna shouted at Hash, "Do it!" A deputy then leaned onto the trigger, which sprang the trap door. citation needed! Bethea fell 8 feet (2.4 m), and his neck was instantly broken.
Afterward, two doctors confirmed he was dead.
His body was taken to Andrew & Wheatley
Funeral Home. Icitation needed! He wanted his body to be sent to his sister in South Carolina so that she could arrange for him to be interred next to his father, but against these wishes, he was buried in a pauper's grave at Owensboro Cemetery (also known as City Cemetery and
"Potter's Field") in Owensboro. 14]It was estimated that a crowd of about 20,000 people gathered to watch the execution.!9! One man, 36-year-old Leonard A. Peters, was killed in a car accident while driving to Owensboro to witness the hanging. Three others, including his wife, were injured. 15. Afterwards, Hanna complained that Hash should not have been allowed to perform the execution in his drunken
condition. Hanna further said it was the worst display he experienced in the 70 hangings he had supervised. citation needed]
The spot where the scaffold stood
(approximately 37.775248° -87.116462°) is now part of a drop-off/pick-up lane in front of the Owensboro Convention Center. citation needed]へ
End of public executions in
Kentucky
As the Kentucky General Assembly had been meeting in its biennial sessions at the time, the media circus surrounding the Bethea execution embarrassed members of the Kentucky
legislature. In spite of the humiliation, they could not amend laws regarding executions until the next session in 1938. However, the trial judges in two separate Kentucky rape cases ordered that the hangings of John "Pete" Montjoy and Harold Van Venison be conducted privately. Montjoy, age 23, was privately hanged in Covington on December 17, 1937.On January 17, 1938, William R. Attkisson of the Kentucky State Senate's 38th District (representing Louisville), introduced Senate Bill 69, repealing the requirement in Section 1137 that executions for convicted rapists be conducted by hanging in the county seat where they raped their victims. The bill was promoted in the Kentucky House of Representatives by Representative Charles W. Anderson Jr., one of the attorneys who assisted Bethea in his post-conviction relief motions.
After both houses approved the bill, Governor Chandler signed it into law on March 12, 1938; it became effective on May 30 of that year.
Chandler later expressed regret at having approved the repeal, claiming, "Our streets are no longer safe." The last person ever legally hanged in Kentucky was Harold Van Venison, a
33-year-old African-American singer, who was privately executed in Covington on June 3, 1938.

What Kevin said. Those who are quiet now, and especially gloating, will end the way that Weinstein did, with the world celebrating their humiliation.

The right has been gloating that the #MeToo era ended, but we're due for a reckoning that's going to make that look like nothing by comparison.

As a Seattle resident, maybe. But based on how cities have responded to ICE, and shown up in the streets, were down the list (but still respectable). Portland should be there though.

100. There was a time when (without media coverage) the US would respond to outbreaks decisively, regardless of politics or wealth of the country. It was moral and practical (outbreaks have a way of getting everywhere). We're seeing the end of that in an era with more disease vectors. Not great.

Was going to respond to this (the evidence for a second case is shaky), but as always Dr Noc nails it. Also talks about Madagascar. youtu.be/VFPBFK-XUo4?...

The real message from this story is that if your gets cancer or some other expensive disease, you're one layoff away from watching them die for lack of access to health care. Think about that in a world where AI may well be about to automate your job.

Yeah -- same mistakes. Plague is endemic near Irkutsk, but there was enough evidence of a more dangerous pathogen to increase alertness. A disciplined response would have predicted expected events on different scenarios, and tracked it. Instead, disinfo and misguided sensationalism.

When conservatives say they fear government, it's always been this in particular they fear: a government that works, laying bare the truth that all of the small government deregulation narrative was a grift to siphon as much money to the rich alas possible.

Trump negotiates like Putin -- each deal is not to find common benefit, but to make enough gains to start from a stronger position after he abandons his agreements in the future. Moreover, he'll happily weaken the company or country he's negotiating for as long as he personally comes up on top.

That's a start, but tax on marginal income and capital gains on the board and execs of companies that rely on govt assistance, such that it offsets 125% of the cost of that assistance, would be more efficient.

30 years before the US became a government paid for and in service of the very rich, it started like this, with post government rewards that got around campaign finance laws. It's the same people now operating in europe, and they have global ambitions. Ignore it at your own (and all of our) peril.

About 50% saw it clearly, too. The most credible answer for the other 50% is that the middle and lower class in the US has been driven into such poverty, over decades, that they'd have voted for anything that might lead to change. And the Democrats failed to provide an alternative. Perfect storm.

True, but Massachusetts had to pay $75,000,000 for highway improvements to support stadium traffic (diverted from city improvements) and the federal government provides tax incentives upwards of $10,000,000 annually. All diverted from city projects to support a profitable business.

It's worse. Taxpayers could pay the same, get the same football team, lower prices for concessions, and nobody would blackout your community from watching the game at home. Literally everyone would be better if he was fully liquidated.

Maybe, but a deeper problem is media becomes a loss leader. The Washington post can lose money but on net, Bezos profits bc the media supports tax policy that makes more than he loses on the post. Same for CBSs owners. It's a fundamental risk to journalism.
