I was thrilled to join the Maryland Advisory Committee to the @usccrgov.bsky.social today to discuss AI & the Maryland Voter, along with wonderful co-panelists @derrickcogburn.bsky.social & Jared DeMarinis. Great conversation around the need for disclaimers in AI-generated political ads.

The other half is six images of human participants named Georgia Coffey, Dr. Derrick Cogburn, Abbe Jolles, Thomas G. Dineen III, Commissioner Shana M. One year ago, I started highlighting the growing number of enforcement matters that the FEC cannot resolve until we regain a quorum. Last year, there were 154. Now, it’s doubled to 307. We need a quorum to tackle this backlog and fully achieve the agency’s mission this election.

The House just passed one of my top legislative priorities in the Stop Foreign Funds in Elections Act. During debate, representatives said “we should all be able to agree that foreign funds should not be influencing or financing ballot measures, referenda, or recall elections.” I concur.

The road to an election leads to the ballot box. It was a treat to view "Ballot Boxes of the Americas" exhibit at OAS. Here are a few of the beautiful and useful ballot boxes that were on display!

While the Federal Election Commission is unable to submit recommendations to Congress for 2025 due to a lack of quorum, I want to keep these critical issues on everyone’s radar:
Chair Shana M. Broussard lists five critical issues that have been submitted as legislative recommendations by unanimous agreement of the FEC in previous years. Namely, (1) Establish a threshold for reporting conduit contributions to enable greater transparency; (2) Extend the foreign national contribution prohibition to include (i) contributions in state and local elections and ballot initiatives and (ii) knowingly helping or assisting a foreign national in violation the prohibition; (3) Protect contributor address information from public disclosure, specifically a contributor’s street name and number, in light of security threats; (4) Increase contribution limitations, thresholds and exemptions, which have not been indexed for inflation since 2002; and (5) Expand the fraudulent misrepresentation prohibition to cover misrepresentation conducted by all persons and organizations, not just federal candidates and their agents.
