I do shit at cons - I give talks, I shill for charity, I do comedic stuff. And that has a place, certainly. But for me nothing compares to a small group playing a board game at a rental house with YouTube ghost documentaries or something playing in the background and someone drawing.

When I initially found out about this I was shocked, but I told myself not to jump to conclusions and do a knee-jerk condemnation. I am glad that I waited for more details; it definitely didn't seem like something Trejo would do if he had all the details.

I kid you not, there were times when I would see the picture book on the floor and I would treat it like it was the necronomicon, giving it a WIDE berth. I didn't want to read it, although nothing bad happened. I should preface this that I could read books when I was three and VERY impressionable.

I think the book was supposed to be a lesson about subverting expectations and how not to fear the unknown, but if that was the lesson I was supposed to gather from it, it was overshadowed by the nightmare of having someone else's fate in your hands, and them terrorized by your actions.

And of course, it turns out he's the monster at the end of the book. Lovable old Grover. And everything is OK. It's a happy ending after all. Or at least, it should be. As a kid who had very little object permanence growing up, I had to relive the terror every single time I read the book.

Grover starts to get more and more bombastic, and makes visual efforts to try and stop you from reading any further. But in order to know the conclusion, all of his efforts ultimately fail. In the end, he can't stop the inevitable. So, he's forced to journey with you to the end of the book.

This terrifies Grover, and he pleads for the reader not to turn the page. But it's a book, and you're supposed to turn the pages to read (and in this case, see) what happens next. So Grover starts to get annoyed, and angry with the reader. Which as a kid, you don't want to make Grover angry.

For those that don't know the premise, Grover is essentially breaking the fourth wall the whole time. He's aware that he's in the book, aware of the reader. He knows the reader has control of turning the pages of the book. And having read the title of the book, he knows a monster is at the end.

There are people out there who know my terror. I've seen people talk about it. Others might be thinking, "But it's Grover. Grover can't be scary," having never read the book. I guarantee you it doesn't hit for adults the same way it does for kids, and this book messed me up as a kid.

So, earlier in the month, I requoted a post asking about the early scary media I could remember, and I said it was probably The Black Hole. But I was wrong. Upon further reflection, it was this children's book right here: The Monster At the End of This Book.

I too rented it from a video store. When I saw there was a sequel I just HAD to watch it. I knew nothing about the movie going in. When I finished the movie I was so upset. I hated everything about the movie. Nothing felt right about it in the slightest.
