I got tired of throwing moldy strawberries from the fridge into my compost so now we make fruit leather (and veggie chips) out of about half the produce we buy within the first few days of getting it and that's helped extend the life of it all a lot.

I really enjoyed growing hydro when I was doing it too. It's about 30 minutes of work a week until harvest, that can be time consuming. Happy to help you plan if you want more assistance or anything. If you're "local," happy to come by and physically help too.

There's a lot more to it and I'm happy to answer individual questions but I want to make clear that I'm a hobbyist and not a professional horticulturist. There are probably inefficiencies in my methods but I'm pretty happy with the results overall for my situation.

Another potential investment for some people would be water. Some nutrient labels say tap is fine but I went above and beyond by setting up a 60 gallon trash can to a reverse osmosis system. Those I think are around $100. I used about ~30 gallons a week.

Those two plants would produce about ounce, but can take 10-12 weeks. Outdoors, you grow bud tall, but indoors you grow it wide. Those 2 plants took up about half the room by the time I was ready to harvest.

Lights + vent is the biggest upfront cost. They probably ran be about $1200 in total between those 3 items because I went with quality. Nutrients cost me under $100 annually. I grew for about 2 years but took a break over the last 2 so this information is probably old.

I grow 2 plants from cuttings in a spare bedroom. The room is about 12x12 (haven't measured since I set it up several years ago), I've got 2 lights that hang from the ceiling. I set up ventillation in the room because my 16 yo lives in the room above and I didn't want to hear from his school.
