People complaining about the new Google icon set are delirious. Should I remind you of the last icon set?
The new Google icon set. Every icon has a distinctive color and shape. The old icon set. Every Google icon has the exact same colors with just the shape being slightly different. The contrast is much less evident compared to the new icon set.

Another example: told it to fix a conflicting warning in VSCode (medium reasoning) it simply replaced the entire VSCode configuration file (tbf while also fixing the issue)
A git diff showing codex replaced the entire vscode settings with some tailwind configs.

This is codex with gpt 5.4 (paid plan) on high reasoning: it just needed to remove the useViewer reference (it's just a react query) instead it left a useless useViewer call and removed unrelated code. You guys are joking right? This is the best LLMs have to offer?

We have reached a new era of civil engineering; now we can build bridges by simply dumping truckloads of shit into the river until the shit mountains are tall enough that some people and maybe cars can cross the river. Truly, it is a revolutionary technology that democraticizes access to bridges; now everyone can dump a truckload of shit over small rivers here and there and cross the rivers instead of asking an engineer to build the bridge for them. This approach completely removes all the bottlenecks in engineering, too: no need to navigate difficult legal or ethical frameworks. The biggest players on the market are staring to replace their bridges with shit mountains, you'd better be catching up and learning how to use this new groundbreaking technology. Some of you have ethical concerns, but this is beyond of the scope of my post. I also recognise that some might notice fish in the rivers dying, or simply slip on the shit; just you wait, I bet it'll be fixed in ~6 months

Literal gold
Sometimes it is possible for there to be a many-months-long effort in software engineering where the instructions from leadership are "go as fast as possible, don't think decisions through, just do things, because time is the most important factor, be as fast as possible" and so a bunch of people get together to make a shittier and shittier train which is only designed to go as fast as possible and all the bolts are wiggling loose under the momentum and sometimes you're like "the bolts are super concerning. the 1 million loose bolts are super concerning. and everything else. i dont like to look at this. im not even sure that's salvageable" and leadership says "train should be faster" and you're not even the fastest train because the shitty huffing wiggling-apart locomotive is being overtaken by other trains that spent longer on the train engineering and then your train derails and gets all crashed up in the grass and is a lot of crashed up busted train pieces all in the grass and leadership is like "okay just put it back on the track and make it go fast" and I don't know how to tell you how much a crashed up train rolling down the hill into the nearest river below is never going to actually be a good fast train.

From HN:

It bothers me that so many programmers I know, here and in real life, seem to never actually have cared about the craft of software development? Just about solving problems.
I like problem solving too. But I also like theory and craft, and in my naïveté I assumed most of us were like me. LLMs divorced craft-programming from tool-programming and now it seems like there were never any craft-programmers at all.

It feels like the group I was part of was just a mirage, a historical accident. Maybe craft-painters felt the same way about the camera.

Still can't believe the UI/UX community allowed floating action buttons to be popular. There should be Nuremberg trials when the reign of terror, this anti pattern has brought upon us, ends. I bet they are the same people that are now trolling us with the liquid glass design.

We have officially gone too far. Yet another directive. Nobody writes code like this, come on. This is a solved problem: you create a task queue and then have a scheduler execute these tasks. Why is the ecosystem moving more and more towards pure magic?

I absolutely despise this way of presenting filters. It's so chaotic and difficult to implement correctly. It's a prime example of a lose-lose UI component. You, the company, the users... Everybody loses.
Example of one of those UIs where you have an "add filter" button and then you select which filter and then a new block pops up with that filter control and then you select the values for the filter. How could anyone think this was ok is beyond me.

This is prototype-level code. Less than 330 lines of code. 1 single objective. Using a library that is battle tested to solve that objective. With extensive documentation and examples. Somehow it managed to create a non trivial bug. This is the latest (released 56 days ago) "Pro" model.

I kept prompting it the errors to try and fix them but there was just no way and I was getting irritated so I slapped some `!` to make it all compile (not modifying the resulting JS). I got this:

Now that React is moving towards having a compiler I wonder if conditional hooks are possible. IIRC the reason the Rules of Hooks™ exist is that conditionally calling hooks break because of different ordering between renders. 🤞

Newer and more modern AI/LLMs instead just add a new step to explicitly remove the parenthesis as they don't understand that the code is correct and/or ask questions to better understand the problem.
