⭐🌊 Scientists from the Doñana Biological Station and the University of Barcelona found that almost one-fifth of the spiny starfish's genome is structured differently depending on its habitat. 👉 www.doi.org/10.1098/rspb...

Ocean acidification drives grazer niche convergence and trophic homogenization in benthic communities
Ocean acidification is expected to alter marine food webs, yet community-level evidence from long-term, naturally acidified systems remains limited. W…

Using stable isotopes (δ13C, δ15N) we reconstructed what they actually eat without opening them up. Result: at the most acidified sites, their niche overlap jumps from 0% to 27%. Two species that never used to compete now might.

Arbacia lixula (the carnivore of the two) went from ~75% animal prey to just ~20% at the most acidified sites. It basically turned herbivore. Paracentrotus lividus, always the algae-eater, barely budged...

What happens when an ecosystem gets simpler? 👀 Two sea urchin species that used to eat very different things, could them end up eating the same one?. 🤿 I dive at a site in La Palma where volcanic CO2 naturally acidifies the seawater, and we found...

Surprise 👀: tests from acidified sites were stronger (higher fracture force) than ambient sites (actual conditions). Dive into the full results here 👇 www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti... #MarineEcology #CO2Vents #Adaptation

What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger? 💪🌊🫧 At a Fuencaliente CO₂ vent, Arbacia lixula shows morphological plasticity under low pH: smaller sizes, jaw and shorter spines. #CO2Vents #SeaUrchins #OA

Could natural CO₂ vents shape biodiversity patterns beyond species richness? 🌊✨ In our latest study, we found molecular evidence supporting the Intermediate Disturbance Hypothesis under ocean acidification—both at the organism and community level. #CO2Vents #OA #Hydrobiologia #ULL #ECOMAR

Can marine species evolve in response to ocean acidification? 🌊🧬 We studied the sea urchin Arbacia lixula from a natural CO₂ vent (La Palma) using genome-wide SNPs. Results reveal signals of local adaptation to acidified conditions. #Genomics #CO2Vents #OA #Echinoderms

Small & cryptic species dominated the acidified areas, previously undetected by traditional methods. This “hidden biodiversity” challenges the expected loss patterns and suggests a future of miniaturized but diverse communities. #Ecology #Biodiversity #OA #Metabarcoding

Chemical characterization of the Punta de Fuencaliente CO2-enriched system (La Palma, NE Atlantic Ocean): a new natural laboratory for ocean acidification studies
Abstract. We present a new natural carbon dioxide (CO2) system located off the southern coast of the island of La Palma (Canary Islands, Spain). Like CO2 seeps, these CO2 submarine groundwater dischar...

🌋 Let me introduce you to the CO₂ vent system at Punta de Fuencaliente, La Palma ( #CanaryIslands ). This site emits volcanic CO₂ via submarine groundwater discharge, creating a natural pH gradient. An ideal setting to study #OceanAcidification! #CO2Vents #LaPalma

What are CO₂ vents? 🌋 They are shallow coastal sites where volcanic CO₂ is naturally released, lowering seawater pH. These areas serve as natural laboratories to study ocean acidification and its impact on marine ecosystems. #CO2Vents #OceanAcidification
