ICE collected the DNA of nearly a million people last year, adding their genetic profiles to a database used for criminal investigations. Under current rules, DHS only needs to place a person in detention to collect their DNA — a practice many argue is unconstitutional.

Stevie Glaberson at Georgetown Law’s Center on Privacy and Technology found that DHS has been collecting DNA samples from detainees — and then sending that genetic information to an FBI database.

On June 4, we welcomed nearly 100 researchers, advocates, technologists, practitioners, individuals with lived expertise, agency leaders, and policymakers to the Georgetown Law campus for a conversation about the growing role of technology in child welfare (or family policing) practice.
Image of room at Georgetown Law filled with attendees listening to speaker at podium. Text reads "New Blog: Data and automation in the family policing system: a primer," by Stevie Glaberson

"This program is illegal, unconstitutional, and deeply corrosive to civil rights and liberties. No amount of coerced 'consent' can make it otherwise." Stevie Glaberson on the Department of Homeland Security’s accelerated DNA collection program.

Last year, we published “Raiding the Genome: How the United States Government Is Abusing Its Immigration Powers to Amass DNA for Future Policing.” Since then, we’ve continued to research DHS’s DNA-collection program. Today, we’re sharing some updates. raidingthegenome.org

Three years ago, we released “American Dragnet: Data-Driven Deportation in the 21st Century.” The report describes the surveillance apparatus that Trump is using to target immigrants, activists and anyone else who challenges his agenda. We’re re-releasing it today with a new foreword.
