Good morning. Nothing like being reminded that we all should probably go off the grid first thing on a Monday morning. Nice to meet you in such a cool and also alarming way.

Today I asked G**gle to play Doechii on Sp*tify, and she played Daughtry. I need someone to tell G that I fight, and that's a violation worth throwing hands over.

I overuse talk-to-text, so sometimes you're gonna get "laffy emoji" instead of 😂, and you're just gonna have to be okay with it.

I'm honored to be involved in work that supports and empowers diverse and marginalized people and communities. There is so much joy here. This is the work that makes the world better for us all. This is the way, and we won't waiver from our mission and our purpose. What about you?

Now, more than ever, is the time to show up and be intentional. Now is the time to double down.

Syard Evans, PhD @sgephd.bsky.social · 11/12/2024
What the world needs right now, and always, are organizations and individuals willing to double down on the truths that are being threatened and denied - that the richness of the diversity of us is the best thing about us, and that all people are valuable and worthy members of our community.

What are you doing? What are you going to do?

We are either acting to affirm, protect, and empower the value and worth of all people, or we are acting against it.

People with characteristics of power in systems of oppression are either actively working against the oppressive systems, or they are perpetuating them. No action (or inaction) is neutral for those of us with power and influence.

Syard Evans, PhD @sgephd.bsky.social · 11/12/2024
This is an important time for an important reminder: only people with significant power can even imagine, much less consider, an option to keep their heads down and avoid the consequences, and people with power in oppressive systems aren't capable of neutrality.

Syard Evans, PhD @sgephd.bsky.social · 11/12/2024
Will you still think that when the worst consequences come, so long as they don't touch you directly? What if they do reach you or people you love?

Syard Evans, PhD @sgephd.bsky.social · 11/12/2024
There are important questions for us all to ask in this moment. What about you? Do you believe if you keep your head down and move carefully - neutralize yourself - that this may all be ok?

Unfortunately, a lot of hurt and harm will occur as we wait for the pendulum to reverse and return to aim at the path of honoring shared humanity and working to dismantle systems of oppression.

Syard Evans, PhD @sgephd.bsky.social · 11/12/2024
In case you're wondering or uncertain, let me say plainly: it's the wrong move. It's always been the wrong move, and the consequences that will come from it - have already come from it - will eventually swing our collective focus back in the direction of justice and community.

Over the past year, with a significant escalation in the last few months, we've watched powerful entities throughout the United States announce their abandonment of intentional work to support and empower inclusion and diversity within their organizations and our communities.

CRDJ is sharing a co-generated Race & Disability Syllabus containing articles, policy assessments, and resources that analyze the impact of Project 2025 on issues of racial and disability justice. Find it here! docs.google.com/document/d/e...
A white, geometric background with a circular podium has depth with shadows and lines. In the middle, a thick hardcover book with the Project 2025 Mandate for Leadership cover is falling onto the cylindrical podium. The book is casting large shadows onto tiny purple humans who are trying to run or roll away from the book, implying that it will crush them once it falls. Above this, bolded text reads "Race and Disability Syllabus."

Join me in celebrating the kind, creative, strong, sarcastic, funny, smart, stubborn, determined, loving, and devoted Emory Caron Brewer. She deserves all of her flowers today (and whatever coins you'd like to toss - $miikaa0). I love you with everything that I got, babe. Happy birthday!

This amazing human is 22 years old today. This birthday, like most things have been in the last few weeks, will be difficult, but there is, and always has been, so much to celebrate - so much joy - when it comes to Ree.

You cannot lead, and if you cannot learn to support work that doesn't center you or allow you to lead, you will always be part of the problem.

You are not the expert here. You know nothing of surviving oppression and necessary coalition building. You've never had to learn those lessons, and they were never taught to you. In fact, you were taught the opposite, that you have a right to comfort, regardless of the condition of the world.

Syard Evans, PhD @sgephd.bsky.social · 17/11/2024
Part of owning your responsibilities means you must understand, acknowledge, and trust that the leadership of marginalized people is required to steer us through. It always has been, and you've contributed to hindering that leadership in pursuit of your own need to "lead" and "do good".

Syard Evans, PhD @sgephd.bsky.social · 17/11/2024
I'm not saying don't do the work that has to be done by all of us to get through this, but you will have to own your responsibilities in all of this in order for us to ever have a chance to build the kind of community that will save anyone.

If the second US election of violence, greed, and hate in human form has stunned you and has you scurrying to create collaborative community and position yourself as a visible ally (but likely not an active accomplice), you are part of the problem. You are part of the reason we are here.
