The 2026 Palaeo-Olympics are coming soon! Join us on October 16th to compete in palaeolithic themed events such as spear throwing, fire starting, and cave painting! This year, teams can have a maximum of 10 people. Student teams are required to have at least one professor, and one grad student.

SFU Archaeology students Jo, Kayla, and Chelsea spent their last lab day at Golemo Gradiste preparing our three charcoal samples to be sent off for C14 dating. These samples were taken from several different burned roof beams that had collapsed in their trench.

The 2026 field season at Golemo Gradište in North Macedonia is underway. This year SFU archaeology students Jo Hughes, Chelsea Noble, and Kayla Blake have joined Dr. Sabrina Higgins as volunteers on the project, where they are excavating part of a late antique church.

Dr. Casey L. Kirkpatrick, an Assistant Professor in the Department of Archaeology, contributed to a study recently published in Nature Communications that revealed 116 signatures of 29 ancient (opportunistic) pathogens from primarily domesticated animals mostly from Bronze Age Eurasian sites.

Over the Spring break, SFU Professors Dr. Cara Tremain, Dr. Sabrina Higgins and volunteers welcomed almost 1,000 people to an archaeology pop-up at Burnaby Village museum. Visitors learned about archaeology through hands-on, interactive, activities including mini excavations.

George Nicholas, Emeritus Distinguished Professor, recently returned from Hokkaido, northern Japan, where he was the invited commentator at the 4th International Indigenous Peoples Forum. This was held in the Ainu village of Nibutani, where he has been working the past 15 years.
