Shawn Flahave @sflahave.bsky.social · 30/03/2025The only way it makes sense, in my opinion, is to remember that humans are overwhelmingly emotional. We are not rational. Facts don't matter as much as feelings. We use logic to justify/rationalize decisions that were already made based on emotion. It takes a LOT of effort to behave otherwise. 000
Shawn Flahave @sflahave.bsky.social · 19/03/2025Working on converting a huge Groovy codebase to Kotlin. This would be damn near impossible without AI. It'd take forever. It takes a long time, and is very tedious, even with the help of AI. This is a perfect job for a LLM. 010

Shawn Flahave @sflahave.bsky.social · 21/02/2025That’s not much different from offering you “equity”. Just today I had someone offering me 25% equity in their company, which is currently just an idea, as comp. But they “know business and sales” and it’ll be worth millions! They’re good at sales, dammit!! Why can’t I see that?!?! 100
Shawn Flahave @sflahave.bsky.social · 12/02/2025Really digging the Lucide icon library. I just ran into a problem where I wanted a filled flag icon, but it seemed that all their icons are outline-only. But for some icons, including Flag, you can just give it a fill and stroke. If you need a filled icon, just give it fill. You have control. Nice! 020

Shawn Flahave @sflahave.bsky.social · 03/01/2025The core React Native library is amazing, but you need a lot more than that to build a great app. So you reach for community libraries, and that's where it all falls apart. It'll work at first. But 6+ months from now, when you're in dependency mgmt hell, you may wish you hadn't gone that route. 010

Shawn Flahave @sflahave.bsky.social · 25/12/2024I think this brilliantly articulates my own thoughts/experience with using LLMs to help with programming. I always figured that for AI to really take over the job it should just write programs directly in binary. Shawn Flahave @sflahave.bsky.social · 22/12/2024Good question - it’s a Google powered autocomplete field in a form for capturing job site information, not for the user’s personal address. We encourage users to select an auto suggestion so we can get GPS coordinates from Google (ie, the “places” library) which is important later on 110
Shawn Flahave @sflahave.bsky.social · 22/12/2024BTW - my form is for capturing information about a job/project for field-service businesses, whereas Stripe's use case is typically e-commerce checkout (capture shipping/billing info). But still seems like it could be helpful for users who are slightly confused by seeing a single text field. idk 100
Shawn Flahave @sflahave.bsky.social · 22/12/2024I currently have a form with an address autocomplete field, to capture an address in a single text field. I noticed that Stripe's Address Element will auto-expand to show extra detail fields once you select an address. Thinking of copying that. Thoughts? #designsky docs.stripe.com/elements/add...docs.stripe.comListen for address inputCollect addresses to use in custom ways using an event listener. 110

Shawn Flahave @sflahave.bsky.social · 19/12/2024Yes, but I think the sentiment from those quotes doesn't give human developers enough credit. We solve problems in creative ways. AI should help us focus more on that, and less on monotonous programming tasks. So far AI doesn't seem to help much with creating new solutions to new problems. 130
Shawn Flahave @sflahave.bsky.social · 18/12/2024Recently switched from i18next to Lingui. I love being able to write the text directly in my JSX instead of having a bunch of t(“msgkey”) calls. Also love the PO format, so I can write comments in the translation file. Makes it easier for LLMs to do the translations for me. 000

Shawn Flahave @sflahave.bsky.social · 08/12/2024My 2¢: Consider the long-term design/complexity of your app and your goals. If it's a really simple app or you just want to get a POC out ASAP, then a PWA or React Native app might be a good choice. OTOH, if you want to provide the best possible UX, I'd go full native (SwiftUI & JetPack Compose). 020

Shawn Flahave @sflahave.bsky.social · 04/12/2024I'm referring to Array.toSorted. This function IS available in Hermes, but not JSC. We're not using Hermes yet. Easily missed in code review. Unit tests won't complain about it. We obviously didn't test an on actual Android device, which should've caught it. Wouldn't be an issue with Kotlin.developer.mozilla.orgArray.prototype.toSorted() - JavaScript | MDNThe toSorted() method of Array instances is the copying version of the sort() method. It returns a new array with the elements sorted in ascending order. 010
Shawn Flahave @sflahave.bsky.social · 04/12/2024Ughh, just realized our React Native app uses toSorted and that causes problems for Android because toSorted is not available there. The best way to avoid this kind of dumb mistake altogether would be to NOT use RN. Use the platform, with a good compiled language (Kotlin) instead. Sigh. 120
Shawn Flahave @sflahave.bsky.social · 03/12/2024AI agents will explode and take over most development, to basically raise the level of abstraction that we deal with as developers. 020
