Here’s one of my favorite Red Bank NJ landmarks this morning. This storm brought “major coastal flooding”. Historic storms w more water = Irene (2011), Dec ‘92 (1992), Donna (1960), & Sandy (2012). Plus maybe 4 other pre-1965 storms that were before my time. Photo via Monmouth Boat Club on FB.

It’s worth remembering that a lot of people in the northeast (esp. Maine, NH, VT) use oil to heat their homes. Heating oil is approx diesel fuel, is at a historic high price, and is more than double the price of a year ago. 😞 (This data is from 2020 census.)
Map of US showing census data on primary source of home heat. Most of New England uses fuel oil.

A major problem w the NESE pipeline is that its installation will disturb centuries of highly polluted muck on the bottom of Raritan Bay, creating lots of pollution for the bay and the NY Bight in general…just as the water is getting cleaner. Cleaner water = more whales in Raritan Bay each year. 🐋

You can’t tell from my Bsky feed, but my top priority is: building political will for climate action at the US federal level. My personal outreach this past year: - 32 calls & emails to my Members of Congress (MoCs) on climate-related policy - 5 lobby meetings w MoC staff H/t @cclusa.org 🔌⚡️

It looks like a July thunderstorm took out my rooftop solar inverter. 😞 Prob 2 weeks to get a new one. The only silver lining is that the current inverter is still under warranty, and the new inverter will probably have many fancy new features. Nonetheless, I am a bit sad. #rooftopsolar

Wrt paper maps and “turn at the broken sign” directions, you bet. For long trips, big maps and a AAA TripTik were the way to go. 🙂 I’m surprised to learn you can still get the spiral-bound, paper, personalized AAA TripTiks. 👍

I hope @jamellebouie.net gives his current thoughts. I am a bit leery of the “ok, let’s let ourselves touch the stove” theory, bc I’m afraid of who gets burned. But I find his remarks last year compelling, esp the quote below. www.nytimes.com/2024/09/27/o...
If a political party wins multiple and overlapping electoral majorities on its platform, if it manages to build an actual legislative package, if it can move that package through two chambers of Congress…then that party deserves a chance to vote on its program without needing to assemble a super majority just to act. And if the voters don’t like it, they can vote them out. That is democracy. - Jamelle Boie 2024

It was a pleasure to be back on campus in Ithaca at Cornell this week. One of the topics at the meeting I attended was GenAI in the classroom. The most disturbing thing I heard is that the profs think students work in study groups less often now bc they have GenAI to lean on. 😔

My @cclusa.org chapter did a tabling event today in central NJ. As it happened, our spot was right across the street from the local GOP. I went and talked to them, and I’m still processing. One convo was w a guy who repeated Secy. Chris Wright’s talking points almost vebatim. 1/

I’m working on a music playlist for Sun Day. #sunday (I’ll put a good list I found in the replies.) I also looked for EV songs. Amazingly, Apple Music has a couple dozen songs called “Electric Car”. All obscure. But obvs EVs are an evocative idea. 🔌💡 P.S. There r very few songs called “Heat Pump”.

At last, I’m reading John Vaillant’s “Fire Weather”. It’s straight-up good storytelling, alongside thoughtful explorations of questions like “why are humans so bad at imagining new catastrophic events, even when all the info is right in front of us?”. Highly recommended. #books #NewWord = petrocene

Charging along interstates is v good. I prefer charging in rest areas, but full svc rest areas don’t seem to exist down south, so I’m happy to get fast chargers 2-5 min off the highway. And yes, I’m not selling my Tesla yet. I’ve got the bumper sticker tho. 😁 2/2

A propos of nothing… #NewWord = “Square Grouper” It seems to date from the 1970s or 1980s, and it is a term, possibly coined by law enforcement, for a bale of grass etc pulled out of the ocean off the FL coast. 😁
