A new study from UC Davis researchers found that waterways in Alaska’s remote Brooks Range are becoming increasingly vulnerable to acid rock drainage as permafrost thaws. The researchers found some of the affected waters were even more acidic and metal-rich than water draining from mines.

A California Highway Patrol helicopter crew rescued an injured rock climber stranded on a 700-foot cliff in the Sierra National Forest on Friday. The climber had fallen while scaling Power Dome, a steep rock face near Courtright Reservoir in Fresno County, leaving him unable to climb to safety.
