In case you’re into this sort of thing: there’s currently a first edition of Spinoza’s Opera Posthuma (1677), containing the first printing of the Ethics, for sale on eBay. A steal at just $43,900. www.ebay.com/itm/26474028...

Rieuwertsz said that the portrait had been made 3 to 4 years after Spinoza's death. He didn’t know the author of the Latin poem - or he didn’t want to say, but he knew that Spinoza's friends quarreled about its contents.

5/ These people come from parts of the Middle East and Central and Eastern Europe. They say that traditional foods and recipes cannot be made with pasteurised and homogenised milk, and that they use raw milk instead. In sum, it's not just an influencer trend.

4/ The other group consists of a younger crowd who follow nutrition trends set by influencers. And then there is a third group that doesn't fit neatly into the "raw milk debate" at all.

Robert Seyfert @seyfert.bsky.social · 20/09/2026
3/ Then there are those who believe raw milk is healthier. This group itself seems to contain two rather different crowds. One is the old-school sceptics of conventional medicine (vaccines etc.) and industrial agriculture (pasteurisation etc.)

2/ I recently spoke to a farmer in Germany who sells raw milk. From her experience, there seem to be three broad groups of customers. First, there are people who simply think it tastes better.

Minna Ruckenstein has made an important point about AI criticism. All too often, the focus is solely on debunking reality, yet this approach fails to mobilise critical forces. The only things it produces are despair and resignation. Latour’s text on the misery of criticism remains relevant.

Curious how fast "nobody reads Durkheim anymore" turns into "you people are turning Durkheim into a myth" once someone actually opens the book.

Quite surprisingly, editing in publishing is largely a postwar phenomenon. Mostly because “writers were expected to know their business.” Publishing was faster too: a manuscript could appear just two months after submission. porticoquarterly.com/essay/wieldi...

7/7 Most importantly, there is simply no evidence here that “shame” caused the death. Moving from an unconfirmed cause of death to a specific social explanation is not Durkheimian analysis. It is speculation, not analysis.
040
Robert Seyfert @seyfert.bsky.social · 17/08/2026
6/7 And even if social forces played a major role, that would not tell us whether this was egoistic, altruistic, anomic, or another form of suicide. Such a classification requires evidence that is effectively impossible to establish in individual cases of suicide.
120
Robert Seyfert @seyfert.bsky.social · 17/08/2026
5/7 Even if the death were confirmed as suicide, it would remain unclear whether social forces were the main cause. Durkheim does not deny biological, psychological or other individual-level causes. His argument concerns the additional explanatory role of social forces.
110
Robert Seyfert @seyfert.bsky.social · 17/08/2026
4/7 Durkheim’s central claim is about social forces and aggregate patterns: they can help explain why suicide rates vary systematically across groups and societies. They do not allow us to determine why one particular individual died by suicide. bsky.app/profile/seyf...
130
Robert Seyfert @seyfert.bsky.social · 17/08/2026
3/7 Second, it invokes Durkheim to argue, in effect, that “shame and the complete destruction of his reputation meant suicide.” But this is not what Durkheim’s theory allows us to conclude.
120
Robert Seyfert @seyfert.bsky.social · 17/08/2026
2/7 First, it assumes that the cause of death was suicide, although no official information confirming this has been released. For academic analysis, treating an unverified assumption of this kind as an established fact should be an absolute no-go.
130
Robert Seyfert @seyfert.bsky.social · 17/08/2026
1/7 I find this analysis by a colleague deeply frustrating, especially at a time when sociology is being criticised for a supposed lack of scientific rigour. There are several serious problems with the argument.

"shame and completely destruction of his reputation meant suicide" is what you wrote. First, not Durkheimian, second, how do you know (that it was suicide and that this is what lead to it)
